Cette contestation de Michel l'archange avec le diable, concernant le corps de Moïse, était décrite dans un livre apocryphe juif intitulé : l'Assomption de Moïse, dans lequel, selon Origène et d'autres Pères de l'Église, Jude a puisé ce récit.

Un fragment de l'Assomption de Moïse a été retrouvé dans une vieille traduction latine. Il ne s'étend pas jusqu'au récit auquel Jude fait allusion. (Die Pseudepigraphen des Alten Testaments übersetzt und herausgegeben von E. Kautzsch, 1900, p. 311 et suivants)

La parole attribuée à l'archange se retrouve dans Zacharie 3.2. Les conjectures qu'on a faites sur l'objet de cette contestation entre l'archange et Satan ne sont pas du ressort de l'exégèse. Jude ne s'y arrête pas. Son but est simplement de citer l'exemple d'un archange qui n'osa point porter (grec) un jugement de blasphème contre Satan lui-même, se souvenant que tout jugement appartient à Dieu seul. Si le fait est légendaire, l'idée qu'il illustre est juste. (Comparer versets 14,15, note.)
