Lui détachera la tête : avec l'ongle. Cette opération, qui correspondait à l'immolation des autres victimes, était très difficile, au dire du Talmud. Voilà pourquoi elle devait être pratiquée par le sacrificateur lui-même. L'Israélite indigent pouvait voir par là que sa modeste offrande n'était pas moins estimée de Dieu que les victimes plus considérables.

Quatre détails distinguent cet holocauste des précédents :

  1. Pas d'imposition des mains, cet acte ne convenait pas à une victime de ce genre.
  2. Tête seule détachée et immédiatement jetée sur l'autel comme ne pouvant fournir du sang, et afin que le sacrificateur eût les deux mains libres pour exprimer contre l'autel le sang du corps.
  3. Le sang simplement exprimé ; il y en avait trop peu pour qu'il fût, recueilli dans des vases.
  4. Incisions aux jointures des ailes correspondant au partage des grandes victimes en leurs pièces.

Nous ignorons ce qu'on faisait des plumes. Comme la peau de l'holocauste n'était pas brûlée (7.8), on peut supposer que les plumes ne l'étaient pas non plus.
