On voit que dans chacune de ces sentences (versets 10-12) qui sont encore l'application de la parabole, le Seigneur a en vue l'économe infidèle, dont la position à l'égard de son maître est exactement la nôtre à l'égard de Dieu. C'est ce que rappellent ces termes : ce qui est à autrui.

Les biens qui nous sont confiés, comme ceux qu'administrait l'économe, ne sont pas à nous, mais à Dieu. Si, comme lui, nous ne sommes pas fidèles dans l'usage que nous en faisons, Dieu pourrait-il nous donner ce qui est à nous ?

Ce dernier mot correspond aux richesses véritables, (verset 11) mais avec une nuance importante, exprimée par le contraste entre ce qui est à autrui et ce qui est nôtre.

Les biens de la terre sont à Dieu, qui les confie à qui il veut, pour un temps, et ils restent toujours pour nous des biens extérieurs.

Le salut, au contraire, la vie éternelle, est à nous, parce qu'elle est un héritage qui nous a été légitimement acquis, (Actes 20.32 ; Romains 8.17 ; Matthieu 25.34) et surtout parce qu'elle nous est assimilée de manière à devenir une partie intégrante de notre nature spirituelle et immortelle.

Cette parole remarquable nous ouvre une perspective inattendue sur la dignité que Jésus attribue à l'âme humaine, et aussi sur l'état des enfants de Dieu dans le ciel, où tout ce qu'ils posséderont sera parfaitement identique à leur être et leur sera approprié pour toujours par un progrès sans fin dans la connaissance et l'amour de Dieu.
