Cette exclamation est une phrase inachevée ; l'émotion empêche Jésus de la finir.

Chacun des mots qu'il y accumule a sa signification profonde : Si tu avais connu ! C'est donc par ignorance que le peuple juif va rejeter son Sauveur et combler par ce crime la mesure de ses péchés ; (comparez Luc 23.34 ; Actes 3.17 ; 1Corinthiens 2.8) mais cette ignorance était volontaire : "Vous ne l'avez pas voulu !" (Matthieu 23.37)

Toi aussi, comme mes disciples, ces âmes droites et simples qui se sont ouvertes à la foi.

Au moins dans ce jour qui est à toi, ou, comme traduisent littéralement nos vieilles versions, au moins dans cette tienne journée : ce jour suprême où Jésus faisait son entrée à Jérusalem offrait une dernière occasion au peuple et à ses chefs de venir se jeter, repentants, aux pieds de Jésus !

Jésus appelle (verset 44) ce jour "le temps de ta visitation."

Il y a dans le développement des peuples comme des individus des moments qui, mis à profit ou négligés, déterminent leur destinée pour longtemps, peut-être pour toujours ; ce sont des temps de crise, de décision pour le bien ou pour le mal. (Comparer Hébreux 3.7,13,15)

"La présence de Jésus provoqua une lutte entre un petit nombre d'âmes bien disposées et la masse corrompue du peuple. Tandis que celles-là s'ouvrirent à son influence et trouvèrent en lui la lumière et la vie, celle-ci n'en reçut que l'anéantissement de ses vaines espérances et de ses visées égoïstes." 0lshausen.

- Les choses qui regardent ta paix. Ces choses d'une si immense importance, c'était la vérité, le pardon, le salut que Jésus offrait à tous. S'ils l'avaient reçu avec foi, tous auraient trouvé en lui la paix et la prospérité. Le mot hébreu qu'employait le Sauveur a les deux significations.

Le verbe sont cachées indique un fait accompli ; et cependant Jésus allait encore prêcher à Jérusalem durant toute une semaine, et ses apôtres après lui pendant quarante ans ; mais, pour le grand nombre, la mesure des iniquités était comblée, le temps de la grâce, de la visitation, (verset 44) était passé.

"En voyant, ils ne verront point ; en entendant, ils n'entendront point." Ces redoutables paroles n'excluaient point du salut les Israélites qui, individuellement, croiraient au Sauveur. (Romains 11.1-5)
