Dans les deux premiers évangiles, cette exhortation s'adressait aux fils de Zébédée : elle était destinée à réprimer leur ambition. N'estil pas tout naturel de penser que Jésus en fit dans une situation analogue une application nouvelle à tous ses disciples ?
- Le terme de bienfaiteur était un titre souvent donné par flatterie à des princes qu'on voulait distinguer comme ayant bien mérité de leur pays et de leur peuple.
- Le mot que nous traduisons par le plus petit signifie proprement le plus jeune, et l'on peut, avec plusieurs interprètes, l'entendre dans ce sens, parce que c'est ordinairement le plus jeune qui doit respecter les plus âgés et les servir.
