Ce dernier verset explique le précédent.

La pauvre veuve avait réellement mis dans le trésor plus que tous les autres, toutes proportions gardées ; car leur offrande, à eux, était prise dans le surplus ou superflu, tandis que la sienne provenait d'une pauvreté que l'évangéliste s'efforce de faire sentir par trois expressions différentes : de son indigence (grec, de son déficit, de son manque), tout ce qu'elle avait, toute sa subsistance (grec toute sa vie).

Mais ce qui constituait surtout l'immense supériorité de son offrande sur celles des autres, c'étaient ses motifs, dont Jésus pénétrait la valeur morale. Elle ne faisait point une aumône, mais un don pour le culte divin, inspiré uniquement par l'amour pour Dieu, à qui elle donnait ainsi son cœur et sa vie. Et ce qui n'est pas moins touchant que son amour, c'est sa confiance sans bornes en Dieu, à qui elle remet le soin d'un avenir absolument destitué de tout.

- Marc et Luc nous ont seuls conservé cette perle entre les récits évangéliques. Comment se fait-il que Matthieu ne l'ait pas recueillie ? Cette question s'adresse à la critique qui prétend que Matthieu a copié Marc ou du moins un proto-Marc.

Quoi ! Matthieu aurait eu sous les yeux un document où se trouvait ce trait si instructif et si touchant, et il l'aurait volontairement omis ? Dire, comme on l'a fait, qu'entre les sévères censures prononcées contre les scribes et les pharisiens (Matthieu 23) et le grand discours prophétique sur l'avenir, (Matthieu 24) il n'y avait plus de place pour l'histoire de la veuve, c'est une défaite.
