Matthieu se borne à dire que la jeune fille fit sa demande à l'instigation de sa mère.

Marc décrit la scène d'une manière plus dramatique : Salomé sort, se rend auprès de sa mère, qui ne craint pas de donner à son enfant un conseil où se trahissent toute sa haine et sa cruauté ; puis cette enfant rentre avec empressement dans la salle du festin et tient à Hérode ce langage impérieux qui nous montre en elle la digne fille de sa mère : Je veux à l'instant, sur un plat, la tête de Jean-Baptiste !
