It happened, when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in Moses' hand, when he came down from the mountain, that Moses didn't know that the skin of his face shone by reason of his speaking with him.

Matthieu et Marc emploient seuls ce mot, Luc dit : "L'apparence de son visage devint autre." Il n'est pas sans intérêt de remarquer que saint Paul exprime par ce même verbe la transformation morale qui s'accomplit dans le chrétien par sa régénération et sa glorification graduelle. (Romains 12.2 ; 2Corinthiens 3.18)
Les évangélistes empruntent à la nature toutes ses splendeurs (comparez Marc et Luc), sans parvenir à nous dépeindre la gloire divine dont toute la personne du Fils de Dieu fut comme inondée en ce moment. Pour le Sauveur, ce fut la réponse à sa prière, le prélude de sa glorification définitive. (Comparer Jean 17.5)
Jésus était sans péché. Il avait marché dès son enfance dans la voie de l'obéissance parfaite. Il s'était développé sans relâche dans la sainteté. Il était arrivé au terme de ce développement. Il pouvait quitter la terre, le temps de l'épreuve étant achevé. Mais il n'était pas normal qu'il sortit de cette vie comme les autres hommes par la mort, car "la mort est le salaire du péché." (Romains 6.23)
L'issue normale de l'existence terrestre pour cet homme parfaitement saint était la glorification progressive de son être tout entier.
"Son corps toujours au service de Dieu toujours l'instrument de la sainteté, devenait un corps spirituel, un corps céleste, un corps tel que nous le posséderons un jour. Il mûrissait insensiblement pour le ciel et la transfiguration marque précisément le moment où Jésus arrivé au point culminant d'une vie humaine, parvient au terme naturel de la sainteté, je veux dire à la gloire." Ch. Porret (Chrétien évangélique, 1879, p. 113).
Les miracles de plus en plus éclatants que Jésus avait accomplis dans les derniers temps (multiplication des pains, marche sur les eaux) étaient des indices de ce triomphe croissant de l'esprit sur la matière.
Mais il fallait que Dieu lui donnât une démonstration solennelle, impossible à méconnaître, non seulement pour lui, mais pour ses disciples, de la réalité de la victoire qu'il avait remportée sur la mort par sa sanctification parfaite. Cette démonstration lui fut fournie par la transfiguration où Dieu l'éleva, quelques instants à l'existence glorieuse du ciel.
Jusqu'ici Jésus, marchant par la foi, avait cru à sa victoire sur la mort. Maintenant il la constate. Fondé sur cette expérience il pourra dire désormais : "Je donne ma vie, afin de la reprendre. Personne ne me l'ôte, mais je la donne de moi-même ; j'ai le pouvoir de la donner et j'ai le pouvoir de la reprendre." (Jean 10.17,18 ; voir, Luc 9.31, note, une autre signification importante de cette scène.)
Pour les disciples ce fut, avec le témoignage divin qui va se faire entendre, (verset 5) une manifestation d'en haut, destinée à affermir leur foi à la divinité de leur Maître. Cette foi était ébranlée par la prédiction des souffrances du Christ. Celle-ci avait renversé toutes leurs espérances. Ils avaient passé probablement les six jours précédents dans un morne abattement, et c'était pour réagir contre cette disposition dangereuse que Jésus avait emmené sur la montagne les trois apôtres qui étaient les plus capables d'exercer de l'influence sur leurs condisciples.
Ce qu'ils virent devait non seulement relever leur courage au moment même, mais les fortifier pour l'avenir. Leur foi, soutenue par ce spectacle qu'ils eurent de la gloire de leur Maître, ne défaillira point quand ils le verront dans les dernières profondeurs de son abaissement et de ses souffrances.
Après l'ascension du Sauveur ils pourront se faire une idée de son état de gloire et mieux saisir l'espérance de lui devenir semblables, un jour, quand ils seront eux-mêmes revêtus d'un corps glorifié. (Philippiens 3.21)
