- Jésus répète ici ce sérieux avertissement dans une application différente. A Matthieu 5, il s'agit de se préserver soi même du mal par le renoncement et au prix des plus douloureux sacrifices ; ici, le même avertissement est donné, mais dans l'intérêt moral des faibles, qu'on ne doit pas induire au mal par un mauvais exemple. (versets 6,7)
Du reste, il ne faut pas matérialiser ces images de manière à ne voir dans le précepte de Jésus, avec plusieurs interprètes, que la mortification des sens ; il a trait aux passions les moins charnelles, aux affections les plus élevées, dès qu'elles mettent en danger la vie de l'âme.
