They shall give this, everyone who passes over to those who are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary; (the shekel is twenty gerahs;) half a shekel for an offering to Yahweh.

Jesus entered into the temple of God, and drove out all of those who sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the money changers' tables and the seats of those who sold the doves.

- Les mots : de Dieu manquent dans Sin., B et les versions égyptiennes ; mais il parait que Matthieu les a ajoutés avec intention pour relever le caractère sacré du lieu qu'il nous montre profané par un trafic illicite.

- Cette scène se passe dans le parvis extérieur du temple, appelé le parvis des Gentils, parce que les païens eux-mêmes y avaient accès. Là s'étaient établis ceux qui vendaient des victimes, de l'encens, de l'huile, du vin et tout ce qui était nécessaire aux sacrifices.
Les changeurs opéraient l'échange des monnaies étrangères contre celle du pays, en particulier contre les didrachmes avec lesquelles il fallait payer le tribut du temple. Le bruit qui se faisait dans cette enceinte, les fraudes qui s'y commettaient, profanaient le saint lieu et troublaient là dévotion des fidèles.
Jésus, faisant usage de son autorité messianique, (Malachie 3.1,2) purifie donc la maison de Dieu et donne en même temps à son action une signification symbolique profonde. (1Corinthiens 3.16,17 ; Ephésiens 2.21)
Il n'est point nécessaire de voir un miracle dans l'obéissance de cette foule qui se laisse expulser ainsi par l'autorité de Jésus. L'impression que produit sur elle sa majesté divine perçant au travers de son humilité, fait que chacun cède devant lui, (comparez Jean 18.6) mais Jésus ne fait usage de sa puissance que pour purifier le temple ; après cet acte d'autorité, il revient à son humble ministère de dévouement et d'amour.
Les actes commis par le Seigneur, témoignèrent davantage que les « hosanna » criés par la foule ; les guérisons qu’Il réalisa dans le temple étaient l'accomplissement de cette promesse : la gloire de la nouvelle dispensation, (celle de la Grâce), allait être plus grande que la précédente, (celle des sacrifices).
Si Christ venait ici-bas, maintenant en de nombreuses églises, combien de maux secrets découvrirait Il et devrait Il assainir ! Combien d’actes sont pratiqués journellement sous le couvert de la religion, actes qui conviennent mieux à un groupe de voleurs qu'à une assemblée de prière !
