Ils se rapportent, d'après Weiss, au verset 32 : pour vous donner occasion de combler la mesure de vos pères ; d'après Meyer, au verset 33 : pour que vous n'échappiez pas au jugement, et cette idée serait reprise par le afin que...du verset 35.
La relation établie par Weiss est plus naturelle. La pensée reste au fond la même : et elle domine toute cette dernière partie du discours : Puisqu'ils se montrent les vrais fils de ceux qui ont tué les prophètes ; (verset 31) puisqu'ils vont combler la mesure de l'iniquité de leurs pères ; (verset 32) puisqu'ils ne pourront fuir le jugement de la géhenne (v.33), le Seigneur va leur envoyer ses serviteurs qu'ils maltraiteront, afin que retombe sur eux tout le sang juste répandu sur la terre.
Redoutable révélation de la justice divine ! Il est bien évident qu'en envoyant aux pécheurs des messagers de paix, l'intention du Seigneur est de les sauver, non de les condamner ; mais si son Evangile n'est pas pour eux "une odeur de vie pour la vie, il devient une odeur de mort pour la mort.." (2Corinthiens 2.16)
- Ceux que Jésus appelle des prophètes, des sages, des scribes, (comparez Matthieu 13.52) ce sont toutes les diverses classes de ses serviteurs qu'il enverra dans son règne pour continuer son œuvre ; (Ephésiens 4.11) Il se sert de termes empruntés à l'Ancien Testament pour être mieux compris de ses auditeurs et surtout pour leur faire sentir que ce seront là les vrais prophètes, les vrais sages, les vrais scribes, par opposition à tous ceux qui, alors, prétendaient à ces titres.
- Parmi les supplices que la haine des hommes infligera à ses envoyés, Jésus désigne celui-ci : vous les crucifierez, qui a paru étonnant à quelques interprètes, parce que c'était là un genre de mort usité chez les Romains et non chez les Juifs, et ces mêmes interprètes en ont conclu que Jésus pensait à sa propre mort.
Mais les Juifs pouvaient faire infliger ce supplice par les Romains, comme ils le firent pour Jésus. La tradition rapporte que l'apôtre Pierre mourut sur une croix ; Eusèbe (H. E. 3, 32) raconte qu'un frère de Jésus, Siméon, fut crucifié ; et combien d'autres disciples l'ont été dans l'empire romain !
- Selon notre évangile, c'est le Seigneur Jésus lui-même qui s'attribue l'envoi de ses serviteurs, et cela par ces mots solennels : voici, je vous envoie...Rien de plus clair et de plus vrai que cette pensée. D'après Luc, (Luc 11.49) ces paroles semblent être une citation : "la sagesse de Dieu dit," et de là chez les commentateurs force hypothèses sur le livre d'où cette citation peut être tirée. (Voir la note sur ce passage.)
Une poule, rassemblant ses poussins sous ses ailes, est l’image bien représentative du tendre Amour du Sauveur, envers ceux qui Lui accordent leur confiance ; cela représente aussi le soin fidèle qu’Il manifeste à leur égard. Christ invite les pécheurs à « prendre refuge » sous Sa tendre protection, les gardant en sécurité, et les nourrissant jusqu'à leur accès à la vie éternelle.
La dispersion actuelle des Juifs, leur incrédulité, et leur conversion future à Christ, sont ici prédites. Jérusalem et « ses enfants » partageaient une grande culpabilité ; le châtiment qui allait les surprendre allait en témoigner. Il en sera de même pour chaque église qui n'est chrétienne que de nom : la vengeance du Seigneur la surprendra de la même manière...
Pendant la dispensation du temps de la Grâce, le Sauveur se tient prêt à recevoir tous ceux qui viennent à lui. Il n'y a rien qui puisse séparer les pécheurs du bonheur éternel, si ce n'est leur orgueil et leur incrédulité coupables.
