- La prédication de Jean-Baptiste
  
  1 Or, en ces jours-là vient Jean le baptiseur, prêchant dans le désert de la Judée,
  
  2 et disant : Repentez-vous, car le royaume des cieux s'est approché.
  
  3 Car c'est ici celui dont il a été parlé par Ésaïe le prophète, disant : "Voix de celui qui crie dans le désert : Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, faites droits ses sentiers".
  
  4 Or Jean lui-même avait son vêtement de poil de chameau et une ceinture de cuir autour de ses reins ; et sa nourriture était des sauterelles et du miel sauvage.
  
  5 Alors Jérusalem, et toute la Judée, et tout le pays des environs du Jourdain, sortaient vers lui ;
  
  6 et ils étaient baptisés par lui dans le Jourdain, confessant leurs péchés.
  
  7 Et voyant plusieurs des pharisiens et des sadducéens qui venaient à son baptême, il leur dit : Race de vipères, qui vous a avertis de fuir la colère qui vient ?
  
  8 Produisez donc du fruit qui convienne à la repentance ;
  
  9 et ne pensez pas de dire en vous-mêmes : Nous avons Abraham pour père ; car je vous dis que Dieu peut, de ces pierres, susciter des enfants à Abraham.
  
  10 Et déjà la cognée est mise à la racine des arbres ; tout arbre donc qui ne produit pas de bon fruit est coupé et jeté au feu.
  
  11 Moi, je vous baptise d'eau pour la repentance ; mais celui qui vient après moi est plus puissant que moi, et je ne suis pas digne de porter ses sandales : lui vous baptisera de l'Esprit Saint et de feu.
  
  12 Il a son van dans sa main, et il nettoiera entièrement son aire et assemblera son froment dans le grenier ; mais il brûlera la balle au feu inextinguible.
  
  Le baptême de Jésus
  
  13 Jésus vient de Galilée au Jourdain auprès de Jean, pour être baptisé par lui ;
  
  14 mais Jean l'en empêchait fort, disant : Moi, j'ai besoin d'être baptisé par toi, et toi, tu viens à moi !
  
  15 Et Jésus, répondant, lui dit : Laisse faire maintenant, car ainsi il nous est convenable d'accomplir toute justice.
  
  16 Alors il le laissa faire. Et Jésus, ayant été baptisé, monta aussitôt, s'éloignant de l'eau ; et voici, les cieux lui furent ouverts, et il vit l'Esprit de Dieu descendre comme une colombe, et venant sur lui.
  
  17 Et voici une voix qui venait des cieux, disant : Celui-ci est mon fils bien-aimé, en qui j'ai trouvé mon plaisir.

  1 En ce temps-là, Jean-Baptiste parut dans le désert de Judée et se mit à prêcher :
  
  2 « Changez de comportement, disait-il, car le Royaume des cieux s’est approché ! »
  
  3 Jean est celui dont le prophète Ésaïe a parlé lorsqu’il a dit : « Un homme crie dans le désert : Préparez le chemin du Seigneur, faites-lui des sentiers bien droits ! »
  
  4 Le vêtement de Jean était fait de poils de chameau et il portait une ceinture de cuir autour de la taille ; il mangeait des sauterelles et du miel sauvage.
  
  5 Les habitants de Jérusalem, de toute la Judée et de toute la région voisine de la rivière, le Jourdain, allaient à lui.
  
  6 Ils confessaient publiquement leurs péchés et Jean les baptisait dans le Jourdain.
  
  7 Jean vit que beaucoup de Pharisiens et de Sadducéens venaient à lui pour être baptisés ; il leur dit alors : « Bande de serpents ! Qui vous a enseigné à vouloir échapper au jugement de Dieu, qui est proche ?
  
  8 Montrez par des actes que vous avez changé de mentalité
  
  9 et ne pensez pas qu’il suffit de dire en vous-mêmes : “Abraham est notre ancêtre.” Car je vous déclare que Dieu peut utiliser les pierres que voici pour en faire des descendants d’Abraham !
  
  10 La hache est déjà prête à couper les arbres à la racine : tout arbre qui ne produit pas de bons fruits va être coupé et jeté au feu.
  
  11 Moi, je vous baptise avec de l’eau pour montrer que vous changez de comportement ; mais celui qui vient après moi vous baptisera avec le Saint-Esprit et avec du feu. Il est plus puissant que moi : je ne suis pas même digne d’enlever ses chaussures.
  
  12 Il tient en sa main la pelle à vanner et séparera le grain de la paille. Il amassera son grain dans le grenier, mais il brûlera la paille dans un feu qui ne s’éteint jamais. »
  
  Le baptême de Jésus
  
  13 Alors Jésus vint de la Galilée au Jourdain ; il arriva auprès de Jean pour être baptisé par lui.
  
  14 Jean s’y opposait et lui disait : « C’est moi qui devrais être baptisé par toi et c’est toi qui viens à moi ! »
  
  15 Mais Jésus lui répondit : « Accepte qu’il en soit ainsi pour le moment. Car voilà comment nous devons accomplir tout ce que Dieu demande. » Alors Jean accepta.
  
  16 Dès que Jésus fut baptisé, il sortit de l’eau. Au même moment le ciel s’ouvrit pour lui : il vit l’Esprit de Dieu descendre comme une colombe et venir sur lui.
  
  17 Et une voix venant du ciel déclara : « Celui-ci est mon Fils bien-aimé ; je mets en lui toute ma joie. »

  4 Or Jean avait son vêtement de poil de chameau, et une ceinture de cuir autour de ses reins, et son manger était des sauterelles et du miel sauvage.
  
  5 Alors les habitants de Jérusalem, et de toute la Judée, et de tout le pays des environs du Jourdain, vinrent à lui.
  
  6 Et ils étaient baptisés par lui au Jourdain confessant leurs péchés.
  
  7 Mais voyant plusieurs des Pharisiens et des Saducéens venir à son baptême, il leur dit : race de vipères, qui vous a avertis de fuir la colère à venir ?
  
  8 Faites donc des fruits convenables à la repentance.
  
  9 Et ne présumez point de dire en vous-mêmes : nous avons Abraham pour père ; car je vous dis que Dieu peut faire naître de ces pierres mêmes des enfants à Abraham.

  1 In those days, John the Baptizer came, preaching in the wilderness of Judea, saying,
  
  2 "Repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand!"
  
  3 For this is he who was spoken of by Isaiah the prophet, saying, "The voice of one crying in the wilderness, make ready the way of the Lord. Make his paths straight."
  
  4 Now John himself wore clothing made of camel's hair, with a leather belt around his waist. His food was locusts and wild honey.
  
  5 Then people from Jerusalem, all of Judea, and all the region around the Jordan went out to him.
  
  6 They were baptized by him in the Jordan, confessing their sins.
  
  7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming for his baptism, he said to them, "You offspring of vipers, who warned you to flee from the wrath to come?
  
  8 Therefore bring forth fruit worthy of repentance!
  
  9 Don't think to yourselves, 'We have Abraham for our father,' for I tell you that God is able to raise up children to Abraham from these stones.
  
  10 "Even now the axe lies at the root of the trees. Therefore every tree that doesn't bring forth good fruit is cut down, and cast into the fire.
  
  11 I indeed baptize you in water for repentance, but he who comes after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit.
  
  12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will thoroughly cleanse his threshing floor. He will gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn up with unquenchable fire."
  
  Le baptême de Jésus
  
  13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan to John, to be baptized by him.
  
  14 But John would have hindered him, saying, "I need to be baptized by you, and you come to me?"
  
  15 But Jesus, answering, said to him, "Allow it now, for this is the fitting way for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he allowed him.
  
  16 Jesus, when he was baptized, went up directly from the water: and behold, the heavens were opened to him. He saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove, and coming on him.
  
  17 Behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased."

Matthieu 1.22-2

Le terme grec (verbe et substantif), qui n'a point d'équivalent dans notre langue, et qu'on traduit par se repentir, se convertir, s'amender, est un mot composé qui désigne le changement ou la transformation morale de l'homme intérieur. La repentance, qui en est le principe, la conversion, qui est un retour à Dieu, n'en épuisent pas l'idée. A la repentance, souffrance morale qui détache l'homme du péché, doit s'ajouter l'action puissante de l'Esprit de Dieu qui crée la vie nouvelle et accomplit la transformation morale. (verset 11, note. Voir surtout Jean 3.3,5 notes.)

-Le sentiment douloureux du péché par le réveil de la conscience est la seule vraie préparation à recevoir le Sauveur et par lui la grâce. Or ce sentiment est une obligation morale, puisqu'ici et partout dans l'écriture, il est ordonné.

Le royaume des cieux, que Matthieu seul désigne ainsi, tandis que les autres écrivains sacrés l'appellent "royaume de Dieu, royaume de Christ," ou simplement "le royaume," désigne la domination souveraine de Dieu sur ses créatures intelligentes, domination en tout conforme à ses perfections : sa sainteté et sa justice, sa miséricorde et son amour. Le mot de royaume, image empruntée aux royaumes de la terre, se trouve déjà dans l'Ancien Testament, où la forme extérieure du règne de Dieu était la théocratie. Exode 19.6 ; Daniel 4.3

Mais ce n'était là encore que l'image, la préparation du vrai règne dont Jésus-Christ est le Roi et que Dieu établit sur les âmes par son Esprit. Ce règne est d'abord intérieur, spirituel Luc 17.21 ; Jean 18.36 mais il s'étend aussi dans le monde, par ses manifestations diverses, et il doit grandir intensivement et extensivement, jusqu'à ce que Christ revienne l'établir dans sa perfection et dans sa gloire Apocalypse 19.6, et que Dieu soit tout en tous. 1Corinthiens 15.28 Ce sont précisément ces divers caractères du règne de Dieu que Matthieu indique par son expression royaume des cieux ; tous les éléments de ce règne viennent du ciel et y conduisent. Par là, l'évangéliste distingue nettement le nouveau règne qui s'approchait, de la théocratie israélite. Quant à ce pluriel : les cieux, dans lequel on a voulu retrouver l'idée rabbinique de cieux divers, comparez 2Corinthiens 12.2-4 il faut y voir plutôt, comme dans la prière du Seigneur Matthieu 6.9, l'idée d'une domination de Dieu, s'étendant aux diverses sphères du monde. S'est approché, en Jésus-Christ qui allait paraître. Et Jean-Baptiste voit dans ce grand événement un motif de repentance : "Convertissez-vous, car..." Par où nous voyons qu'il savait par l'Esprit prophétique ce que Jésus enseignera bientôt, que si un homme n'est né de nouveau, il ne peut voir le royaume de Dieu. Jean 3.3

Cependant il ne dit pas : "Convertissez-vous pour que ce règne s'approche, mais parce qu'il s'est approché." Tout, même dans la transformation morale de l'homme, a son principe dans la miséricorde éternelle de Dieu et dans sa grâce, qui toujours nous prévient.
