Edom est associé à Moab comme étant dans des conditions toutes semblables. Lui aussi, comme descendant d'Esaü, avait été mis par Dieu à l'abri de toute hostilité de la part d'Israël. Mais Edom aussi refusa le passage à Israël sur son territoire et se prépara à le recevoir à main armée. Plus tard il s'associa constamment aux ennemis d'Israël (voir le prophète Abdias).
Edom est le nom du peuple ; Séir celui de la contrée.
Son ennemi : contraste avec sa qualité de parent.
Sa possession : quand un jour la protection que Dieu lui accorde actuellement fera place au châtiment mérité ; comparez Abdias 1.19 : Ceux du midi, de la tribu de Juda, posséderont la montagne d'Esaü.
