Nomme-le Jizréel... Ce nom, choisi de Dieu, est employé ici sans qu'il soit fait allusion à son sens étymologique : Dieu sème, Dieu disperse, dont le prophète se servira plus tard (versets 5 et 11 ; 2.22). Ce que ce nom doit rappeler, c'est le rôle historique qu'avait joué la localité ainsi désignée dans les événements les plus récents de l'histoire du peuple des dix tribus. On donnait le nom de plaine de Jizréel à la grande et large vallée située dans la tribu d'Issacar, qui de l'ouest à l'est coupe en deux le plateau occidental de la Palestine. Cette plaine est en quelque sorte la porte de tout le pays ; aussi est-elle devenue le théâtre ordinaire des luttes qui ont ensanglanté la Terre Sainte. Mais ce même nom de Jizréel désignait plus spécialement la ville située dans cette plaine, dont Achab avait fait sa résidence d'été, et où Jéhu avait consommé le massacre de sa maison ; de là ce qui suit : Je punirai le sang de Jizréel... Ces paroles se rapportent évidemment à l'extermination de Jézabel et des soixante-dix fils d'Achab, ainsi que de tous les autres membres de sa famille par Jéhu (2Rois 9.1-10.31). Cette mesure avait été ordonnée par l'Eternel, il est vrai (1Rois 19.16-17 ; 2Rois 9.6,10), comme punition du sang innocent de Naboth versé par Achab (2Rois 9.21-26). Mais Jéhu avait égorgé en outre le roi de Juda Achazia et ses frères qui se trouvaient à Jizréel, ce que Dieu ne lui avait point commandé ; et surtout, ce jugement sanglant s'était transformé en un véritable crime, parce que Jéhu ne l'avait fait servir qu'à l'assouvissement de son ambition et qu'il avait maintenu le culte des veaux d'or, cette plaie du royaume des dix tribus qu'il avait mission d'extirper. Ce crime pesait donc encore sur sa maison et sa dynastie ; et le prophète annonce ici qu'il sera prochainement expié (voir introduction II).

Encore un peu de temps... Le quatrième et dernier rejeton de Jéhu, Zacharie, successeur du roi Jéroboam II sous le règne duquel Osée prononçait ces paroles, ne monta sur le trône que pour être assassiné au bout de six mois.

      31 But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law of Yahweh, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He didn't depart from the sins of Jeroboam, with which he made Israel to sin.

      15 They rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified to them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and followed the nations that were around them, concerning whom Yahweh had commanded them that they should not do like them.
      16 They forsook all the commandments of Yahweh their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made an Asherah, and worshiped all the army of the sky, and served Baal.
      17 They caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do that which was evil in the sight of Yahweh, to provoke him to anger.
      18 Therefore Yahweh was very angry with Israel, and removed them out of his sight: there was none left but the tribe of Judah only.
      19 Also Judah didn't keep the commandments of Yahweh their God, but walked in the statutes of Israel which they made.
      20 Yahweh rejected all the seed of Israel, and afflicted them, and delivered them into the hand of spoilers, until he had cast them out of his sight.
      21 For he tore Israel from the house of David; and they made Jeroboam the son of Nebat king: and Jeroboam drove Israel from following Yahweh, and made them sin a great sin.
      22 The children of Israel walked in all the sins of Jeroboam which he did; they didn't depart from them;
      23 until Yahweh removed Israel out of his sight, as he spoke by all his servants the prophets. So Israel was carried away out of their own land to Assyria to this day.
