Ephraïm,... idoles. Dieu lui suffit pleinement ; désormais, il n'a plus rien à demander à ses anciens faux dieux.

Qu'aurait-il... littéralement : que m'a-t-il encore à faire avec les idoles ?

C'est moi qui... : Les idoles, qui n'ont ni bouche, ni yeux, ni bras, ne pouvaient ni lui répondre, ni le suivre du regard (Psaumes 115.4-8). En opposition à ces divinités impuissantes et mortes, semblables à des arbres desséchés, Dieu se compare à l'arbre le plus vivace, le cyprès, qui ne perd jamais sa verdure et qui rappelle l'arbre de vie. Qu'Ephraïm reste uni à lui, et il ne cessera jamais de mériter son nom : double fécondité.
