World English Bible My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you, that you may be no priest to me. Because you have forgotten your God's law, I will also forget your children.

6 à 10 On pourrait appliquer ce passage au peuple entier ; il faudrait admettre, dans ce cas, que le sacerdoce, dont il est parlé verset 6, désigne la dignité d'Israël comme peuple de sacrificateurs (Exode 19.6). Cependant, ce sens paraît bien forcé ; et comme les versets 8 et 9 s'adressent expressément à la classe des sacrificateurs proprement dits, il paraît plus naturel d'appliquer à ceux-ci le passage entier dès le verset 6.

Les sacrificateurs étaient les véritables auteurs de cette ignorance dans laquelle le peuple était plongé. Les sacrificateurs des dix tribus n'étaient point ceux de la famille d'Aaron, seuls légitimes. Les rois d'Israël les avaient établis de leur propre chef, et cela, de nom du moins, pour servir l'Eternel. Ces prêtres intrus sont menacés d'après la loi du talion d'un double châtiment : l'un qui frappera leur personne, ils seront rejetés du sacerdoce ; l'autre qui frappera celle de leurs enfants.

Les prêtres et le peuple ont tous rejeté la connaissance de la vérité ; il est alors normal que Dieu les rejette. Ils ont oublié la loi de Dieu, négligé de la garder à l'esprit et manqué de la transmettre à leur postérité ; il est logique qu'en conséquence Dieu les oublie, eux et leurs enfants.

Si nous déshonorons Dieu, par notre manque de révérence, Celui-ci, tôt ou tard, nous couvrira de honte.

Au lieu de mettre en garde le peuple contre le péché, et l'inciter à la pratique des sacrifices, pour bien montrer l'offense faite à Dieu, les prêtres conduisaient le peuple dans l'iniquité, sans l'exhorter à l'expiation. Il est relativement malsain de se réjouir du péché des autres car cela peut se retourner contre nous. On ne peut jouir en toute quiétude de ce qui est gagné malhonnêtement. Le peuple et les prêtres s'endurcissaient dans le péché ; ils méritaient, en pure logique, leur punition. Ceux qui pratiquent ensemble le péché doivent s'attendre à partager une ruine commune. Toute convoitise du cœur finira un jour ou l'autre par extirper la force et la vigueur. C'est pour cette raison que certains professeurs sont si ennuyeux, si peu attrayants, enseignant vainement la religion. Ils sont attirés par leur propre convoitise, ce qui éloigne leur cœur de leur sujet d'enseignement.
