1 à 3 La condition du bonheur (versets 1 et 2) ; ce bonheur lui-même (verset 3).

Heureux. Ce terme, souvent employé dans les Psaumes (32.1 ; 41.1 ; 119.1 etc.), est proprement une exclamation : Oh ! bonheur de l'homme... Comme le discours de Jésus sur la montagne, le premier psaume s'ouvre par une béatitude. La condition du bonheur est décrite d'abord d'une manière négative, sans doute parce que, le péché régnant partout, le fidèle doit commencer par ne pas agir comme le grand nombre. La première chose qui frappe en lui, c'est qu'il ne marche pas selon le conseil...

Marche..., s'arrête..., s'assied. Gradation dans le mal : on entre dans la mauvaise voie, on y persiste et on finit par ne plus la quitter. Un progrès semblable dans le mal est marqué par les termes : méchants, pécheurs, moqueurs.

Les méchants, littéralement : les gens peu stables, sans principes (Esaïe 57.20).

Les pécheurs : ceux qui se sont habitués à une vie coupable (Luc 15.2).

Les moqueurs : ceux dont l'esprit, devenu tout à fait profane, ne voit plus dans ce qui est saint que matière à plaisanterie.

David a écrit la plupart des psaumes ; cependant, quelques-uns ont été composés par d'autres écrivains, dont l'identité n'est pas absolument certaine. Mais tous ont été écris selon l'inspiration du Saint-Esprit et nulle autre partie de l'Ancien Testament n'est plus fréquemment citée ou rapportée dans le Nouveau. Chaque psaume peut relater directement Christ, dans sa personne, dans son caractère, ou dans son ministère, ou peut aussi orienter les pensées des croyants vers Lui. Les psaumes sont le cri du cœur du croyant, causé soit par l'affliction due au péché, soit par la recherche de Dieu, ou soit par l'allégresse qui émane de la communion avec Lui. Que nous soyons dans la détresse, en lutte pénible avec la tentation, ou alors triomphants dans l'espoir ou le plaisir de la délivrance en admirant les perfections divines, remercions Dieu pour sa pitié, pour ses actions de médiateur en toutes choses dans le plaisir éprouvé lors de son service ; les psaumes forment une référence d'expérience divine, par laquelle nous pouvons nous juger nous-mêmes. Leur valeur, dans cette perspective, est très grande, et leur utilisation fera croître la puissance de la vraie religion du cœur. Par les expressions du psalmiste, l'Esprit nous aide à prier. Si les psaumes nous sont familiers, dans tout ce que nous demandons en nous approchant du trône de la grâce, dans la confession des péchés, la prière, ou l'action de grâce, nous pouvons être aidés.

Quelles que soient les pensées pieuses qui nous animent, les désirs saints ou l'espérance, la peine ou la joie, nous pouvons y trouver les mots qui conviennent, les paroles saines et parfaites. Dans ce Livre divin, les prières et les louanges ont été offertes d'âge en âge par l'église, au trône de la grâce.

Psaumes 1:1-3 Méditer la parole de Dieu, c'est tenir un discours en nous-mêmes, relatif aux sujets importants qu'elle mentionne, avec toutes les applications que cela implique pour l'âme et la pensée. Nous devons porter un regard constant sur la Parole de Dieu, en tant que règle pour toutes nos actions et source de tous nos réconforts, et La garder dans nos pensées nuit et jour. Pour cette tâche, le temps ne doit pas compter.

      54 The man who is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the remnant of his children whom he has remaining;
      55 so that he will not give to any of them of the flesh of his children whom he shall eat, because he has nothing left him, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in all your gates.
      56 The tender and delicate woman among you, who would not adventure to set the sole of her foot on the ground for delicateness and tenderness, her eye shall be evil toward the husband of her bosom, and toward her son, and toward her daughter,
      57 and toward her young one who comes out from between her feet, and toward her children whom she shall bear; for she shall eat them for want of all things secretly, in the siege and in the distress with which your enemy shall distress you in your gates.
      58 If you will not observe to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, that you may fear this glorious and fearful name, YAHWEH YOUR GOD;
      59 then Yahweh will make your plagues wonderful, and the plagues of your seed, even great plagues, and of long continuance, and severe sicknesses, and of long continuance.
      60 He will bring on you again all the diseases of Egypt, which you were afraid of; and they shall cling to you.
      61 Also every sickness, and every plague, which is not written in the book of this law, Yahweh will bring them on you, until you are destroyed.
      62 You shall be left few in number, whereas you were as the stars of the sky for multitude; because you didn't listen to the voice of Yahweh your God.
      63 It shall happen that as Yahweh rejoiced over you to do you good, and to multiply you, so Yahweh will rejoice over you to cause you to perish, and to destroy you; and you shall be plucked from off the land where you go in to possess it.
      64 Yahweh will scatter you among all peoples, from the one end of the earth even to the other end of the earth; and there you shall serve other gods, which you have not known, you nor your fathers, even wood and stone.
      65 Among these nations you shall find no ease, and there shall be no rest for the sole of your foot: but Yahweh will give you there a trembling heart, and failing of eyes, and pining of soul;
      66 and your life shall hang in doubt before you; and you shall fear night and day, and shall have no assurance of your life.
      67 In the morning you shall say, "I wish it were evening!" and at evening you shall say, "I wish it were morning!" for the fear of your heart which you shall fear, and for the sight of your eyes which you shall see.
      68 Yahweh will bring you into Egypt again with ships, by the way of which I said to you, You shall see it no more again: and there you shall sell yourselves to your enemies for bondservants and for bondmaids, and no man shall buy you.
