Car je mange la cendre. Le genre de vie si misérable auquel je suis réduit semble justifier l'attitude méprisante de mes ennemis.

La cendre au lieu de pain : allusion à la coutume de s'asseoir sur la cendre et de s'en couvrir la tête, en signe de grande affliction (Job 2.8 ; Ezéchiel 27.30) ; cette cendre, qu'il respire, lui tient lieu de nourriture.
