33 à 43 L'Eternel abaisse le méchant et relève le misérable.

Maintenant que les tempêtes sont passées et qu'Israël est arrivé au port désiré, le psalmiste jette un regard sur cette terre de son peuple, autrefois si fertile, aujourd'hui aride (verset 34), mais que Dieu va transformer de nouveau. Comme dans les strophes précédentes, tous les verbes sont ici au passé. Il semble que le psalmiste continue à raconter un événement déjà accompli. Et peut-être a-t-il en effet présent à l'esprit plus d'un épisode du séjour d'Israël en terre étrangère (voir versets 35 et 39, notes). Mais il nous semble évident que s'il les rappelle, c'est pour que chacun tire de ces événements la leçon qu'ils renferment pour le moment présent (verset 43). On comprend que la nature même de cette partie finale du psaume ne se prête pas au refrain des quatre strophes précédentes.

Il a changé les fleuves en désert : même expression Esaïe 50.2. On sait combien l'aspect de la Palestine a varié, suivant les destinées du peuple de Dieu.

Que de changements impromptus peuvent contrecarrer les affaires des hommes ! L'état de désolation dans lequel se trouvait la Judée et ses environs, explique tout cela. Si nous regardons autour de nous dans le monde, nous observons que beaucoup de petits changements finissent par en former de gigantesques. Nous pouvons parfois observer souvent que ceux qui atteignent rapidement les plus hauts sommets de l'échelle sociale retombent aussi vite au plus bas niveau. La richesse du monde n'offre aucune garantie ; souvent, ceux qui en disposent se croient dans une certaine sûreté et finissent par tout perdre.

Dieu possède de nombreux moyens pour appauvrir l'homme. Le juste se réjouira. Cela finira par convaincre les plus réticents de la providence divine. Quand les pécheurs voient comment Dieu ôte les biens de ceux qui en ont abusé, ils ne peuvent que se taire.

Il est très utile d'être assuré de la véracité de la bonté divine. Il est très sage de garder à l'esprit notre devoir. La personne réellement sage se réjouira par le contenu merveilleux de ce psaume. Elle comprendra la faiblesse et la misère de l'homme, la puissance de l'amour de Dieu, non par notre propre mérite mais à cause de Sa Miséricorde.
