L'apôtre termine son énumération par la mention de deux privilèges d'Israël qui sont la gloire la plus excellente de ce peuple.

Ces privilèges consistent, non plus en des grâces impersonnelles, mais en des personnes : ce sont les pères, les patriarches Abraham, Isaac et Jacob, dont les Juifs se glorifiaient de descendre, et c'est celui qui couronnait toutes les bénédictions de Dieu, le Messie, le Christ qui, selon la chair, est issu des Israélites ; l'apôtre ne dit pas que le Christ leur "appartienne".

Puis il ajoute une sorte de doxologie, que l'on peut rapporter soit au Christ lui-même, soit à Dieu le Père. Dans ce dernier cas, il faut mettre un point après le Christ, et traduire : "Celui qui est au-dessus de toutes choses, Dieu soit béni éternellement."

Les manuscrits les plus anciens étant dépourvus de ponctuation, la question ne peut être tranchée que par l'exégèse. Les Pères de l'église les réformateurs et la majorité des interprètes modernes rapportent cette phrase au Christ, que l'apôtre désignerait comme étant au-dessus de toutes choses, Dieu béni éternellement.

Plusieurs exégètes (Meyer, Oltramare) et quelques éditeurs du texte (Tischendorf) estiment que la doxologie a Dieu pour objet.

D'autres (Reuss, Stapfer) attribuent au Christ l'épithète : lui qui est au-dessus de tous (on peut aussi traduire par le masculin) et réduisent la doxologie aux mots : Dieu soit béni éternellement. L'ordre des mots, dans le grec, est peu favorable a cette interprétation.

On a conjecturé enfin que la doxologie était une note écrite en marge par un lecteur judéo-chrétien, ému de tous ces privilèges de son peuple note qui se serait glissée dans le texte. Cette supposition ne se fonde sur aucune variante dans les manuscrits.

- On objecte à l'application de la phrase entière au Christ :

1° qu'il n'y a pas d'exemple dans le Nouveau Testament de doxologie qui ait Christ pour objet ;

2° que jamais Paul n'appelle Christ Dieu, et que l'expression : Dieu qui est au-dessus de toutes choses désigne sûrement le Créateur tout-puissant, elle serait en contradiction avec l'idée paulinienne de la subordination du Fils au Père.

A la première objection, on peut opposer 2Timothée 4.18. Du reste notre proposition, rapportée à Christ, n'est pas, à proprement parler, une doxologie ; c'est l'énoncé de son origine divine, qui fait antithèse à la mention de son origine humaine.

La christologie de l'apôtre lui permet d'appeler Christ Dieu, dans le sens où Jean applique ce terme à la Parole avant son incarnation. (Jean 1.1) On peut se demander si Paul ne donne pas ce titre à Christ dans Ephésiens 5.5, et 2.13.

Dans Colossiens 2.9, il dit de Christ : "Toute la plénitude de la divinité habite corporellement en lui." Il n'est donc pas inadmissible que, dans notre passage, il l'appelle Dieu. Il le présente comme l'instrument et le but de la création ; (1Corinthiens 8.6 ; Colossiens 1.16,17) il peut donc dire qu'il est audessus de toutes choses. (comparez Philippiens 2.6-11)

Il ne faut pas, du reste, réunir les deux épithètes : Dieu et au-dessus de toutes choses ; il vaut mieux traduire : lui qui est au-dessus de toutes choses, Dieu béni éternellement.

Il nous paraît plus indiqué, dans ces conditions, de rapporter la proposition à Christ, pour les deux raisons suivantes.

1° Il n'y a rien dans le contexte qui est pu engager l'apôtre à intercaler une doxologie en l'honneur de Dieu le Père, par celleci le fil du discours se trouverait coupé. Elle ne saurait être conçue comme l'expression de sa reconnaissance, provoquée par les privilèges d'Israël, qu'il vient d'énumérer, puisque, dans sa pensée, cette énumération n'a d'autre but que de faire ressortir la culpabilité du peuple. Il n'est pas naturel non plus de concevoir la doxologie comme une protestation contre l'incrédulité des Juifs (comparez Romains 1.25)

2° Après la désignation de l'origine humaine du Christ : issu des Israélites selon la chair, on attend, comme complément de cette pensée, une mention quelconque de son origine et de sa grandeur divines (comme dans Romains 1.3,4 ; 1Timothée 3.16 ; Philippiens 2.8) et cela d'autant plus que le but de l'apôtre est de montrer la grandeur du don de Dieu en Jésus-Christ.
