La nation des Crétois. D'après une tradition, confirmée par Hérodote, les Philistins auraient émigré, du moins en partie de l'île de Crète (voir 1Samuel 30.14 ; Jérémie 47.4, note). Le nom de Philistins paraît venir d'un mot éthiopien signifiant : émigrants.

Canaan, terre des Philistins. Le terme de Canaan est appliqué ici à la Philistie, pour indiquer que celle-ci partagera le sort du pays proprement dit de Canaan et sera aussi dépouillée de ses habitants. Au reste, la Philistie faisait primitivement partie de la Terre promise (voir Genèse 10.19 ; Josué 13.3), et le nom même de Palestine (littéralement Philistie), employé pour désigner le pays tout entier, provient de là.
