7 à 21 Apologue de Jotham.

Les peuples de l'Orient sont très amateurs des discours figurés et des paraboles ; ils s'en servent pour adresser des reproches qu'ils ne pourraient formuler directement.

Garizim. Cette montagne s'élève au sud de la vallée de Sichem, formant une abrupte paroi de rochers de 240 mètres de hauteur. Sur le chemin qui de Sichem mène au sommet de la montagne, se trouve un rocher de quelques mètres de largeur qui s'avance et surplombe la ville. On suppose que c'est de là que parla Jotham. L'acoustique dans cet endroit facilite une transmission rapide et claire de la voix, en sorte qu'il put se faire entendre sans grand effort du peuple de la ville ; voir Josué 8.34, note.

Nous lisons dans ce texte qu'il n'y avait aucune raison valable pour qu'un arbre soit déclaré roi, pour dominer sur tous les autres : tous étaient plantés par l'Éternel. Il était de même impossible de trouver un roi pour Israël, car Dieu était en fait son Roi.

Ceux qui font don de leur personne, pour le bien public, et qui obtiennent des résultats positifs, doivent être respectés et honorés par tous, plus que ceux qui ne sont que de simples figurants ! Tous ces « arbres fruitiers » refusent souvent d'être promus au dessus des autres ; or, comme le texte le dit en marge, il y avait des arbres nobles et d'autres qui l'étaient moins. En fait, pour régner, un homme doit à la fois, se donner, tout en exerçant une grande prudence. Ceux qui ont été élus pour leur intégrité et leurs capacités, doivent renoncer à leurs intérêts personnels et à tout avantage, pour le bien des autres. Ceux qui s'avancent pour recevoir l'honneur et la dignité, courent en fait le risque de perdre leur efficacité dans leur travail. Pour quelle raison, ceux qui désirent pratiquer le bien, sont-ils souvent effrayés par l'envergure de la tâche ?

Jotham compare Abimélec à un roncier ou à un chardon, l'un comme l'autre, complètement inutiles et destinés à être brûlés. Ainsi était vraiment cet homme !
