Les dons ici désignés par l'apôtre sont au nombre de neuf : les deux premiers ont surtout leur siège dans une intelligence éclairée et sanctifiée par l'Esprit, (verset 8) les cinq suivants sont plus en rapport direct avec une foi forte, dans laquelle le cœur et la volonté prédominent (versets 9,10) ; les deux derniers concernent les langues et leur interprétation. (verset 10)

Ce n'est pas sans raison que Paul les range après tous les autres : les chrétiens de Corinthe y attachaient un prix exagéré, par des motifs qui n'étaient pas toujours purs ; (1Corinthiens 14) deux fois encore (versets 28,30) l'apôtre assigne à ces dons la dernière place. Au reste, cette triple division des dons ici nommés n'est point arbitraire ; non seulement elle est psychologiquement fondée, mais elle est indiquée, en grec, par un mot spécial qui commence chacune des trois subdivisions, il signifie à un autre, mais il est différent du mot placé devant chaque don particulier. (C'est-à-dire que Paul ouvre sa première division par ce mot à l'un et continue par à un autre l'énumération des dons particuliers ; mais il ouvre la seconde et la troisième division par à un autre, dans le sens d'une autre catégorie.) (versets 9,10)

- Dans la première division, l'apôtre place la parole (ou discours) de sagesse et de science (ou connaissance), c'est-à-dire le don de parler avec clarté et profondeur des mystères de Dieu. La sagesse dans ce sens signifie surtout la vérité divine s'appliquant immédiatement à la pratique de la vie chrétienne ; (Comparer 1Corinthiens 2.6,7, note) la science est le don de pénétrer bien avant dans la doctrine révélée, de la saisir dans son ensemble et dans ses détails, et de l'exposer pour l'instruction des autres. Paul unit souvent ces deux dons qui font le docteur. (1Corinthiens 12.28,29 ; Ephésiens 4.11 ; comparez Ephésiens 1.17 ; Colossiens 1.9 ; 2.3, et relativement à Dieu, source de ces grâces, Romains 11.33)

- La foi (verset 9) désignée comme un don spécial de l'Esprit, n'est pas seulement cette confiance du cœur, commune à tous les chrétiens, et qui nous rend participants de Christ et du salut par lui ; mais cette foi héroïque qui, par moments, se saisit de la toute-puissance de Dieu et accomplit des miracles. (1Corinthiens 13.2)

Aussi est-ce à la suite de cette foi, comme en étant les fruits, que l'apôtre place les dons miraculeux. (versets 9,10)

Les dons de guérison sont distingués des opérations de miracles (Grec : "opérations de puissances"), comme le particulier du général. Il est remarquable que Paul met au rang des dons spéciaux le discernement des esprits, cette pénétration qui distingue, comme par un instinct spirituel et sûr, le vrai et le faux dans ceux qui se disent apôtres ou prophètes, ou simplement chrétiens. (1Jean 4.1 ; Actes 5.3 ; 1Corinthiens 14.29 ; Philippiens 1.9,10)
