30 à 36 La sentence : mort de Hophni et de Phinées en un même jour (verset 34) ; cette mort sera le signal de la déchéance de toute la famille d'Eli, objet du déplaisir de l'Eternel ; au lieu de s'éteindre simplement, elle offrira à Israël le spectacle d'une race rejetée et dont pourtant la misère ne peut finir. L'Eternel retirera Israël de son humiliation actuelle, mais sans que le sacerdoce soit l'organe de cette bénédiction ; il sera au contraire abaissé profondément. Et quand enfin Dieu le relèvera aussi, ce sera pour le confier à une autre famille avec laquelle les descendants d'Eli n'auront plus que d'humiliantes relations de mendicité.

Il est difficile de constater dans l'histoire les faits répondant à cette prophétie. Elle peut se rapporter à la substitution de Samuel à Eli et à ses fils, ou bien à la substitution de la branche aînée (celle d'Eléazar) à la cadette (celle d'Ithamar), qui avait passé avant la première, nous ne savons à quelle occasion et pour quel motif ; comparez 1Rois 2.35. Plusieurs ont vu ici l'annonce de l'abolition du sacerdoce aaronitique par l'avènement du Messie.

J'avais déclaré : Nombres 25.13. Les promesses faites à Phinées, fils d'Eléazar et représentant de la famille d'Aaron, sont considérées ici comme valables pour Eli ; comparez aussi Exode 29.9, promesse faite à toute la famille d'Aaron.

Loin de moi cela ! Devant l'infidélité humaine, il n'y a pas de promesse qui tienne. L'Eternel trouve, pour accomplir sa parole, quelque autre moyen imprévu.
