1 Working together, we entreat also that you not receive the grace of God in vain,2 for he says, "At an acceptable time I listened to you, in a day of salvation I helped you." Behold, now is the acceptable time. Behold, now is the day of salvation.3 We give no occasion of stumbling in anything, that our service may not be blamed,4 but in everything commending ourselves, as servants of God, in great endurance, in afflictions, in hardships, in distresses,5 in beatings, in imprisonments, in riots, in labors, in watchings, in fastings;6 in pureness, in knowledge, in patience, in kindness, in the Holy Spirit, in sincere love,7 in the word of truth, in the power of God; by the armor of righteousness on the right hand and on the left,8 by glory and dishonor, by evil report and good report; as deceivers, and yet true;9 as unknown, and yet well known; as dying, and behold, we live; as punished, and not killed;10 as sorrowful, yet always rejoicing; as poor, yet making many rich; as having nothing, and yet possessing all things.11 Our mouth is open to you, Corinthians. Our heart is enlarged.12 You are not restricted by us, but you are restricted by your own affections.13 Now in return, I speak as to my children, you also be open wide.

14 Don't be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship have righteousness and iniquity? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?15 What agreement has Christ with Belial? Or what portion has a believer with an unbeliever?16 What agreement has a temple of God with idols? For you are a temple of the living God. Even as God said, "I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they will be my people."17 Therefore "'Come out from among them, and be separate,' says the Lord. 'Touch no unclean thing. I will receive you.18 I will be to you a Father. You will be to me sons and daughters,' says the Lord Almighty." -
1 Συνεργοῦντες δὲ καὶ παρακαλοῦμεν μὴ εἰς κενὸν τὴν χάριν τοῦ θεοῦ δέξασθαι ὑμᾶς·2 λέγει γάρ· Καιρῷ δεκτῷ ἐπήκουσά σου καὶ ἐν ἡμέρᾳ σωτηρίας ἐβοήθησά σοι· ἰδοὺ νῦν καιρὸς εὐπρόσδεκτος, ἰδοὺ νῦν ἡμέρα σωτηρίας·3 μηδεμίαν ἐν μηδενὶ διδόντες προσκοπήν, ἵνα μὴ μωμηθῇ ἡ διακονία,4 ἀλλ’ ἐν παντὶ συνιστάνοντες ἑαυτοὺς ὡς θεοῦ διάκονοι· ἐν ὑπομονῇ πολλῇ, ἐν θλίψεσιν, ἐν ἀνάγκαις, ἐν στενοχωρίαις,5 ἐν πληγαῖς, ἐν φυλακαῖς, ἐν ἀκαταστασίαις, ἐν κόποις, ἐν ἀγρυπνίαις, ἐν νηστείαις,6 ἐν ἁγνότητι, ἐν γνώσει, ἐν μακροθυμίᾳ, ἐν χρηστότητι, ἐν πνεύματι ἁγίῳ, ἐν ἀγάπῃ ἀνυποκρίτῳ,7 ἐν λόγῳ ἀληθείας, ἐν δυνάμει θεοῦ· διὰ τῶν ὅπλων τῆς δικαιοσύνης τῶν δεξιῶν καὶ ἀριστερῶν,8 διὰ δόξης καὶ ἀτιμίας, διὰ δυσφημίας καὶ εὐφημίας· ὡς πλάνοι καὶ ἀληθεῖς,9 ὡς ἀγνοούμενοι καὶ ἐπιγινωσκόμενοι, ὡς ἀποθνῄσκοντες καὶ ἰδοὺ ζῶμεν, ὡς παιδευόμενοι καὶ μὴ θανατούμενοι,10 ὡς λυπούμενοι ἀεὶ δὲ χαίροντες, ὡς πτωχοὶ πολλοὺς δὲ πλουτίζοντες, ὡς μηδὲν ἔχοντες καὶ πάντα κατέχοντες.11 Τὸ στόμα ἡμῶν ἀνέῳγεν πρὸς ὑμᾶς, Κορίνθιοι, ἡ καρδία ἡμῶν πεπλάτυνται·12 οὐ στενοχωρεῖσθε ἐν ἡμῖν, στενοχωρεῖσθε δὲ ἐν τοῖς σπλάγχνοις ὑμῶν·13 τὴν δὲ αὐτὴν ἀντιμισθίαν, ὡς τέκνοις λέγω, πλατύνθητε καὶ ὑμεῖς.

1 Ainsi, puisque nous collaborons avec Dieu, nous vous en supplions : ne négligez pas la grâce que vous avez reçue de lui.2 Dieu déclare en effet : « Au moment où se manifestait ma faveur, je t’ai écouté, au jour du salut, je suis venu à ton secours. » Eh bien, voici maintenant le moment d’accepter la faveur de Dieu ; voici le jour du salut.3 Il ne faut pas que l’on puisse critiquer notre fonction, c’est pourquoi nous ne voulons scandaliser personne en quoi que ce soit.4 Au contraire, nous cherchons en toutes circonstances à nous présenter comme de vrais serviteurs de Dieu : nous supportons avec beaucoup de patience les souffrances, les détresses et les angoisses.5 On nous a battus et mis en prison, on a soulevé le peuple contre nous ; accablés de travail, nous avons été privés de sommeil et de nourriture.6 Nous nous montrons serviteurs de Dieu par notre pureté, notre connaissance, notre patience et notre bonté, par l’action du Saint-Esprit, par notre amour sincère,7 par notre prédication de la vérité et grâce à la puissance de Dieu. Nos armes offensives et défensives, c’est de faire ce qui est juste aux yeux de Dieu.8 On nous honore ou on nous couvre de mépris ; on nous insulte ou on nous respecte. On nous regarde comme des menteurs alors que nous disons la vérité,9 comme des inconnus alors que nous sommes bien connus, comme des mourants alors que nous sommes bien vivants. On nous punit, sans pourtant nous exécuter ;10 on nous attriste et pourtant nous sommes toujours joyeux ; nous sommes pauvres, mais nous enrichissons beaucoup de gens ; nous paraissons ne rien avoir, nous qui, en réalité, possédons tout.11 Nous vous avons parlé franchement, chers amis corinthiens, nous vous avons largement ouvert notre cœur.12 Nous ne vous avons pas refusé notre affection, mais c’est vous qui avez fermé votre cœur.13 Alors, je m’adresse à vous comme à mes enfants : répondez à notre affection, ouvrez-nous largement votre cœur !

14 N’allez pas vous placer sous le même joug que les incroyants, d’une manière absurde. Comment, en effet, ce qui est juste pourrait-il s’associer à ce qui est mauvais ? Comment la lumière pourrait-elle s’unir à l’obscurité ?15 Comment le Christ pourrait-il s’entendre avec le diable ? Ou bien, qu’est-ce qu’un croyant peut avoir en commun avec un incroyant ?16 Quel accord peut-il y avoir entre le temple de Dieu et les idoles païennes ? Car nous sommes, nous, le temple du Dieu vivant, comme Dieu lui-même l’a dit : « Je demeurerai et je marcherai avec eux, je serai leur Dieu et ils seront mon peuple. »17 C’est pourquoi « vous devez les quitter et vous séparer d’eux. Ne touchez à rien d’impur, et moi je vous accueillerai.18 Je serai un père pour vous et vous serez des fils et des filles pour moi, dit le Seigneur tout-puissant. »
