Paul termine son discours par un sérieux avertissement, dont il emprunte les termes au prophète Habacuc. (Habakuk 1.5)

Il cite d'après les Septante, qui s'écartent à quelques égards de l'hébreu.

Ainsi, ces mots : Voyez, contempteurs, supposent un texte différent de l'hébreu qui porte : Regardez parmi les nations.

Ainsi encore, la version grecque ajoute au texte le verbe que nous rendons par : disparaissez, et qui signifie proprement : devenez invisibles.

- Le prophète annonçait au peuple le jugement que Dieu allait exercer sur lui par les Chaldéens.

Telle était l'œuvre qui devait le remplir d'étonnement et qu'il ne pourrait croire si on 1a lui racontait.

En citant ce passage, Paul annonçait à ses auditeurs, s'ils rejetaient la grâce divine, un jugement pareil. Cette menace s'est accomplie pour le peuple juif dans la ruine de Jérusalem, qui mit fin à son existence comme nation. elle pourra s'accomplir, dans la rétribution du dernier jour, pour tous ceux â. qui la grâce aura été offerte en vain.
