Moment tragique pour ces Juifs qui rejettent la grâce ! Les paroles de l'apôtre rendent plus émouvante encore cette scène, qui s'était déjà produite ailleurs. (Actes 13.45,46)

Secouer ses vêtements, en rejeter même la poussière contre quelqu'un, était une action symbolique, figurant la rupture absolue de toutes relations. (Comparer Actes 13.51 ; Matthieu 10.14)

Le sang de ces hommes rebelles, c'est-à-dire la responsabilité de leur ruine, de leur mort, retombera sur leur tête.

Paul s'en déclare net parce qu'il leur a annoncé le salut. (Comparer Actes 20.26)

Cette image terrible est empruntée à l'Ancien Testament ; (2Samuel 1.16 ; 1Rois 2.32,33 ; Ezéchiel 33.4) elle se retrouve dans la bouche de Jésus-Christ lui-même. (Matthieu 23.35)
