On a souvent entendu cette parole du Sauveur aussi dans le sens de donner et recevoir des biens matériels. Et alors on s'imagine qu'elle exprime le sentiment de bonheur qu'un cœur sensible trouve à donner et les impressions pénibles qu'éprouve celui qui est dans la nécessité de recevoir.

Ce ne serait là, dans le premier qu'une volupté égoïste et raffinée, dans le second, que de l'orgueil.

La pensée de l'apôtre, dans l'application actuelle qu'il fait de la parole de Jésus, est qu'il est plus heureux pour un serviteur de Dieu de faire part de biens spirituels, même en s'imposant des privations et des fatigues que de travailler en vue d'une récompensé à recevoir.

Dans ce sens, la belle sentence de Jésus est susceptible d'applications diverses, si l'on en saisit bien l'esprit.

- Cette parole, comme tant d'autres, (Jean 20.30) n'a pas été conservée dans les Evangiles ; l'apôtre l'avait reçue par la tradition orale ou l'avait trouvée dans les nombreux écrits qui circulaient sur la vie du Sauveur. (Luc 1.1)
