Les faux témoins reproduisent exactement les moyens mis en œuvre contre le Seigneur Jésus lui-même. (Matthieu 26.59 et suivants) Leur faux témoignage n'était pas absolument mensonger, mais consistait à rapporter des paroles d'Etienne en les détournant de leur sens.

Ainsi il pouvait fort bien avoir prononcé au sujet du saint lieu et de la loi des paroles (le texte reçu, avec quelques majuscules ; et versions, ajoute blasphématoires) qui n'étaient que l'écho des enseignements du Sauveur, mais qui, aux yeux des Juifs, étaient sacrilèges.

Il pouvait, en annonçant l'Evangile de la grâce, avoir donné un sens spirituel tout nouveau aux coutumes transmises par Moïse.

Il pouvait même, en dénonçant les jugements de Dieu sur le peuple rebelle, avoir redit telle parole de Jésus qui implique la destruction du temple. (Matthieu 24)

Ces mots : Jésus, ce Nazaréen sont pleins de mépris.

- Il n'est pas impossible qu'Etienne eût des vues tout évangéliques sur l'abolition de l'ancienne alliance ; il était helléniste (verset 1, note) et, comme l'observe Néander, l'éducation grecque qu'il avait reçue pouvait déjà l'élever bien au-dessus des étroits préjugés juifs. Mais surtout il était rempli d'Esprit saint et de sagesse chrétienne, (versets 3,10) et, par cette double raison, il pouvait avoir devancé les apôtres de Jérusalem eux mêmes dans la connaissance de la vérité.

Aussi est-ce avec raison que Néander voit en lui le précurseur de l'apôtre Paul. (Hist. de l'établissement et de la direction de l'Eglise chrétienne, trad. Fontanès, I, p. 41.)

      Hébreux 10

      10 by which will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
      11 Every priest indeed stands day by day serving and often offering the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins,
      12 but he, when he had offered one sacrifice for sins forever, sat down on the right hand of God;
      13 from that time waiting until his enemies are made the footstool of his feet.
      14 For by one offering he has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.
      15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us, for after saying,
      16 "This is the covenant that I will make with them: 'After those days,' says the Lord, 'I will put my laws on their heart, I will also write them on their mind;'" then he says,
      17 "I will remember their sins and their iniquities no more."
      18 Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.

      Hébreux 12

      26 whose voice shook the earth then, but now he has promised, saying, "Yet once more I will shake not only the earth, but also the heavens."
      27 This phrase, "Yet once more," signifies the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that have been made, that those things which are not shaken may remain.
