9 à 12 Ces versets sont une parenthèse. En rappelant tout ce que Dieu avait fait pour sanctifier son peuple, ils font ressortir avec plus de force la culpabilité des actes précédents. Un peuple que l'Eternel n'aurait pas comblé de ses faveurs serait coupable en se conduisant de la sorte ; Israël l'est donc doublement !

Anéanti l'Amorrhéen : le premier des peuples de Canaan qu'Israël eut à combattre et dont la défaite lui garantit la victoire sur tous les autres. Comparez Nombres 21.21 et suivants (Sihon et Og).

Leur hauteur : non dans le sens figuré, leur orgueil, mais leur haute taille. Comparez Deutéronome 3.11.

Fruits, racines, pour dire : l'arbre tout entier qui est ici l'image de ce peuple puissant. Après que Dieu leur a donné le pays des Amorrhéens, eux se conduisent en Amorrhéens sur cette même terre.

On doit souvent se rappeler les diverses grâces que nous avons reçues ; cela ajoute encore de la culpabilité à celle accumulée par nos péchés commis. Chacun des enfants d'Israël se voyait rappeler comment jouir convenablement des plaisirs terrestres et comment en percevoir toute leur valeur. Les serviteurs fidèles sont de grandes bénédictions pour tous ; mais c'est à Dieu qu'il appartient de les élever.

La conscience des pécheurs pourra témoigner que la disponibilité de la grâce divine ne leur a jamais manqué. Le peuple faisait tout ce qu'il pouvait pour laisser les croyants à l'écart.

Satan et ses serviteurs sont sans cesse occupés à corrompre les esprits de jeunes personnes qui tournent leur regard vers les cieux ; ils en entraînent beaucoup vers l'amour des plaisirs, en compagnie de ceux qui s'enivrent.

Une multitude de jeunes gens, ayant fait une profession de foi, ont erré dans l'ivresse des boisson fortes, et ont été ainsi détournés à jamais. Le Seigneur hait le péché, surtout les péchés de son peuple, c'est pour Lui un vrai fardeau. Et malgré Sa souffrance et Sa lassitude à ce sujet, Son pouvoir n'est pas altéré, pour le plus grand bien du pécheur.

Quand les hommes rejettent la Parole de Dieu, en s'obstinant à pécher, et quand cela devient la caractéristique générale d'un peuple, cela conduit à la misère, malgré toute la fausse apparence de son pouvoir et de ses ressources.

Humilions-nous vraiment devant le Seigneur, à cause de toute notre ingratitude et notre infidélité.
