S'ils ne se repentent pas des œuvres qu'elle leur enseigne, grec de ses œuvres, des œuvres dont Jésabel est l'instigatrice.

La menace formulée dans ces versets annonce de terribles jugements de Dieu sur cette fausse prophétesse et sur tous ses adhérents, jugements dont les termes et les images sont aussi empruntés à l'histoire de la destruction de la maison de Jésabel. (2Rois 10.1 et suivants)

Encore ici les interprètes se décident pour le sens littéral ou le sens figuré, selon qu'ils voient dans Jésabel un personnage réel ou un nom symbolique. Toutefois, même dans le premier cas, on peut entendre divers traits de cette menace dans un sens moral, tandis que d'autres ont leur signification littérale.

Ainsi, jeter quelqu'un sur un lit ne peut signifier que le châtier par une sévère maladie ; frapper (grec tuer) de mort, ne saurait avoir que son sens propre. Mais ceux qui commettent adultère avec elle peuvent être ceux qu'elle a entraînés à l'idolâtrie ; ses enfants, ceux qu'elle a séduits.

Quoi qu'il en soit, le but de ce sévère jugement sera de révéler à toutes les Eglises, dans lesquelles les désordres de Thyatire avaient eu du retentissement, la toute science et l'inflexible justice de Celui qui sonde les reins et les cœurs, et qui rend à chacun selon ses œuvres. (Jérémie 11.20 ; 17.10 ; Psaumes 7.10 ; 62.12)
