Dans l'Ancien Testament, Jérusalem est considérée comme le centre du royaume de Dieu, le lieu où l'Eternel avait établi sa demeure parmi les hommes, où il se manifestait à eux. Les Juifs, il est vrai, avaient fait du temple "une caverne de voleurs," (Jean 2.16) et sa destruction fut le châtiment du crime qu'ils commirent en rejetant le Messie. Mais "leur incrédulité ne saurait anéantir la fidélité de Dieu." Ce qui avait été promis et préfiguré dans l'ancienne Jérusalem se réalise en un sens infiniment supérieur.
La Jérusalem nouvelle descend du ciel, d'auprès de Dieu. Si le voyant la contemple descendant du ciel, c'est que la "terre nouvelle," (verset 1) dont elle sera le centre, deviendra le séjour des saints glorifiés ; ou bien ce trait signifie simplement que la nouvelle Jérusalem sera d'essence céleste, que l'opposition du ciel et de la terre n'existera plus. Jérusalem descend d'auprès de Dieu, parce qu'elle existait dans son conseil éternel, avant d'apparaître.
Cette Jérusalem, en effet, est l'Eglise, comme l'indique une seconde image ajoutée à la première : préparée comme une épouse qui s'est parée pour son époux. L'Eglise a déjà été désignée comme l'épouse du Messie dans Apocalypse 19.7,8, note. Elle s'est maintenant parée pour son mari (grec), rendue digne de lui par sa parfaite sainteté. (Ephésiens 5.27)
