Dont le nom... Le nom babylonien de Daniel est ajouté à son nom hébreu, parce que c'est sous ce premier nom qu'il était connu des peuples auxquels l'édit est adressé.

D'après le nom de mon dieu : le nom de Bel-Mérodac que Nébucadnetsar avait spécialement adopté pour son dieu. Il y a ici une difficulté : la forme babylonienne du mot Beltsatsar parait être : Balatsu-oussour, qui signifie : protège sa vie ! Le nom de Bel ne s'y trouve pas comme dans le nom de Belsatsar. Plusieurs critiques ont vu dans ce fait une preuve de la composition du livre de Daniel à une époque très postérieure, où son auteur ne comprenait plus la signification de ce nom propre, et croyait trouver dans sa composition le nom du dieu babylonien. Cependant, dans tout le livre, les deux noms de Belsatsar et de Beltsatsar ne sont jamais confondus ni employés l'un pour l'autre. Et à supposer que l'étymologie que nous venons de donner soit la vraie : protège sa vie ! le sujet de la phrase est en tout cas un nom de dieu, vraisemblablement celui de Bel, non exprimé, à cause de l'assonance de la syllabe Belt qui commence le mot.
