Pour l'épreuve en général, voir Genèse 22.1, note. L'épreuve du désert a eu un double but : donner à Israël l'occasion de manifester ses dispositions secrètes à l'égard de Dieu : pour connaître ce qui est en ton cœur ; et donner à Dieu l'occasion de révéler sa fidélité, qui suffit à l'homme quand toute autre ressource lui manque : pour t'apprendre que l'homme ne vivra pas... (verset 3).

Pour connaître. Cette expression appliquée à Dieu est tirée des relations humaines dans lesquelles un homme n'apprend ce qui est dans le cœur d'un autre que par les actes ou les paroles de celui-ci. Voir Genèse 18.21, note.
