17 à 32 Les chrétiens ne doivent plus se conduire comme les païen ; ils doivent vivre d'une vie nouvelle et sainte.

Ce donc reprend évidemment la pensée de Ephésiens 4.1 et l'exhortation à une conduite chrétienne, interrompue par la digression des versets Ephésiens 4.4-16.

- Ce qui va suivre, Paul ne le dit pas seulement de sa propre autorité, il les en conjure (voy. 1Timothée 5.21) dans le Seigneur, en son nom et dans une communion de vérité avec lui.

L'apôtre exhorte les chrétiens d’Éphèse, au Nom et par l'autorité du Seigneur, à ne pas continuer à vivre comme les impies, qui marchent dans de vaines convoitises et diverses affections charnelles.

Les Païens, de tous côtés, ne marchent-ils pas dans la vanité de leur esprit ? Ne devons-nous pas faire la distinction entre les véritables chrétiens et ceux qui ne le sont « que de nom » ?

Ceux qui se livrent au péché ne possèdent aucune connaissance du salut ; ils sont assis dans les ténèbres, les préférant à la lumière. Ils ont une aversion et de la haine pour la sainteté : elle ne représente par pour eux le chemin de vie que Dieu exige et approuve, et par lequel nous vivons pour Lui ; cette sainteté est aussi la ressemblance à Dieu Lui-même, dans Sa pureté, Sa justice, Sa vérité et Sa bonté.

La Vérité de Jésus-Christ se manifeste dans Sa magnificence et Sa puissance.

L’homme, par nature, est corrompu ; sa nature est composée de divers éléments, se soutenant et s’activant tous ensemble : les désirs coupables ne sont que des convoitises trompeuses ; ils promettent le bonheur, mais en fait, rendent plus misérable ; ils conduisent à la destruction, s'ils ne sont pas combattus ni mortifiés. Ces mauvais penchants doivent être abandonnés, tels de vieux vêtements souillés ; ils doivent être éradiqués.

Il n'est pas suffisant d’abandonner la corruption ; nous devons également posséder les principes de la Grâce. Par « l'homme nouveau » il faut comprendre la « nouvelle nature », la « nouvelle créature », dirigée par un nouveau principe : la Grâce qui régénère, incitant le racheté à mener une nouvelle vie, de justice et de sainteté. Toute cette « marche spirituelle » est générée par le pouvoir tout-puissant de Dieu !
