29 à 36 La dixième plaie : Mort des premiers-nés

Il ne paraît pas que l'on puisse attribuer à cette dernière plaie une cause naturelle, telle que l'une de ces pestes qui sévissent parfois au printemps dans la contrée du Nil. Car le fléau ne frappe que les premiers-nés, il les frappe tous ; il les frappe à la même heure ; il atteint aussi ceux des bêtes ; enfin ceux des Israélites sont tous préservés. Dieu veut faire sentir par là que c'est bien lui cette fois qui passe et qui frappe.

Les Égyptiens endurèrent l'anxiété et l'horreur des ténèbres pendant trois jours et trois nuits ; ils subirent ensuite une calamité encore plus forte : la plaie s'attaqua aux premiers-nés : ceux-ci représentaient la joie et l'espérance des familles Égyptiennes. Ce peuple avait martyrisé les enfants Hébreux ; maintenant, Dieu s'attaque aux enfants d'Égypte.

L'Éternel frappa en tous lieux : du trône, à la cour de Pharaon, aux endroits les plus secrets des prisons. Les princes comme les paysans subissaient tous, le même jugement divin. L'ange de destruction entra dans les demeures qui n'avaient pas le linteau de leur porte aspergé de sang, c'était le messager du malheur. Il accomplit inéluctablement sa course mortelle, ne laissant aucune maison sans un mort. Imaginez les cris qu'on pouvait entendre dans tout le pays d'Égypte : des cris d'agonie, sortant de chaque demeure.

Il en sera de même, quand le Fils de l'homme viendra visiter les pécheurs, au jugement dernier. Les enfants de Dieu, Ses « premiers-nés », sont préservés de la destruction. Les hommes ont tout intérêt à se tourner vers Dieu, car quand ce Dernier les visitera, l'heure sera terrible.

L'orgueil de Pharaon était maintenant réduit à néant : il était obligé de céder. La Parole de Dieu demeure : nous n'avons rien à gagner, en discutant les ordonnances divines et en tardant à obéir à Dieu.

En ce moment de terreur, les Égyptiens eurent une pensée favorable envers les enfants d'Israël : ils les laissèrent s'en aller rapidement. L’Éternel prit soin de ne pas laisser partir le peuple, « les mains vides » : les Hébreux purent prendre des provisions pour le long voyage qui les attendait.
