Ce verset nous ramène au nord, en Mésopotamie. Haran (Carrhae) : ancienne ville de Mésopotamie, au sud d'Edesse (Esaïe 37.12, note) ; là mourut Thérach père d'Abraham. C'était le point de croisement de plusieurs routes de caravanes, allant du sud au nord (le long du Tigre et le long de l'Euphrate) et de l'est à l'ouest.

Canné : probablement Calné, près du Tigre (Genèse 10.10 ; Esaïe 10.9, note).

Eden. Ce mot ne s'écrit pas comme le nom du paradis ; ce n'est pas non plus l'Eden qui est dans le Liban ; c'était un endroit situé dans la Mésopotamie (2Rois 19.12 ; Esaïe 37.12, note).

Schéba. On est étonné de retrouver ici le nom d'une contrée d'Arabie ; mais Pline nous apprend que les Sabéens apportaient eux-mêmes leurs marchandises aux grandes foires annuelles de Haran et passaient de là jusqu'en Phénicie.

Assour ne nous paraît pas pouvoir désigner ici l'Assyrie ; c'est probablement la ville de Sura, aujourd'hui Essurieh, à l'ouest de l'Euphrate, sur la route des caravanes de Palmyre (Tadmor) à Haran.

Kilmad : sans doute la ville de Charmande, dont parle Xénophon comme d'une grande cité située au-delà de l'Euphrate.
