Avec un joyeux empressement, l'apôtre passe brusquement, sans particule, à la partie positive de sa démonstration : Christ nous a rachetés ! Sur ce verbe racheter, qui signifie racheter de, délivrer par un prix, voy. 4.5 ; 1Corinthiens 6.20 ; 7.23 ; comparez Matthieu 20.28.

Deutéronome 21.23, cité d'après les Septante, qui traduisent : "est maudit par Dieu quiconque est pendu au bois." L'hébreu porte : "Un pendu est une malédiction de Dieu." Cette parole motive l'ordre donné aux Israélites d'enterrer un supplicié dans la journée même, "afin de ne pas souiller le pays par la vue de cette malédiction." L'apôtre, à cause de 1'application qu'il fait ici de ces paroles, retranche le mot par Dieu ou de Dieu.

"Comme lorsqu'un homme est condamné à mort, et qu'un autre, un innocent, s'offre à mourir à sa place, et ainsi l'arrache à son châtiment : voilà ce que Christ a fait pour nous. Car il n'était pas, lui, sous la malédiction de la loi, mais il l'a prise sur lui, (Galates 4.4) afin d'en délivrer ceux qui s'y trouvaient." Chrysostôme.

La précision des termes, l'ensemble de ce passage, tous les enseignements de l'apôtre à ce sujet (voir entre autres Romains 3.22-25 ; 8.3 ; 2Corinthiens 5.21), ne sauraient laisser le moindre doute sur le caractère expiatoire de la mort du Sauveur.

Cette mort fut le châtiment, la malédiction de la loi, volontairement soufferte par le plus insondable amour. Sans cela, comment aurait-elle racheté les pécheurs de cette malédiction ? Comment aurait-elle transformé cette malédiction en une bénédiction ? (verset 14)

Mais qu'est-ce que cette malédiction ? celle de Dieu ? Dieu aurait-il maudit son Bien-aimé, le Saint et le Juste personnellement ? L'apôtre ne dit rien de pareil, et c'était là une impossibilité morale. Paul parle de la malédiction de la loi dont Christ nous a rachetés, c'est-à-dire de la peine ou du châtiment stipulé par la loi ; (verset 10) et c'est cette peine, ce châtiment que Jésus-Christ a pris sur lui en sa mort (1Pierre 2.24 ; comparez 2Corinthiens 5.21), comme membre et représentant de notre humanité.

Les termes : être fait péché, devenir malédiction (l'abstrait pour le concret), et cela pour nous, à notre place, signifient donc, comme le dit Pierre, porter (et ôter) le péché, la malédiction qu'il méritait. L'exemple que cite l'apôtre (Deutéronome 21.23) conduit au même résultat.

Le supplicié était "une malédiction de Dieu ;" l'hébreu porte que Dieu avait ordonné cette peine par sa loi, sans qu'il s'en suivit nécessairement que le condamné fût, quant à son âme, maudit de Dieu ; il pouvait être l'objet de la grâce divine, tout en souffrant la peine de son crime. Et pourtant, afin d'éviter tout malentendu, l'apôtre, en appliquant cet exemple à Jésus, retranche, comme nous l'avons dit, du texte qu'il cite le mot de Dieu.

Cela est significatif. La même vérité ressort du fait incontestable que jamais Jésus n'a cessé d'être l'objet de l'amour de Dieu. Tout en souffrant pour nos péchés, en Gethsémané et sur la croix, il l'appelle son Père ; (Matthieu 26.39 ; Luc 23.46) bien plus, il déclare lui-même que le Père l'aime, parce qu'il met sa vie pour ses brebis. (Jean 10.17)

Le mystère de la rédemption, ce que Paul appelle la folie de la croix, est la conciliation de ce double fait des souffrances du Sauveur et de l'amour dont Dieu n'a cessé de l'aimer. Cela revient au fond à concilier la justice et l'amour en Dieu.
