D'une part, Agar, esclave, qui enfante, non selon la promesse, mais selon la chair, (versets 22,23) représente le Testament de Sinaï qui ne produit en réalité que l'esclavage. (verset 24) Elle est ainsi semblable (Grec : "du même ordre, sur la même ligne," elle correspond) à la Jérusalem d'à présent, (verset 25) le centre théocratique de ce peuple juif qui s'obstine à vouloir rester dans la servitude de Sinaï, en repoussant la liberté de la grâce ; à vouloir obtenir par la chair ce qui ne s'obtient que par la promesse. (Ces pensées, présentées sous une autre forme, reviennent à ce qu'a établi l'apôtre ci-dessus, Galates 3.15 et suivants ; verset 1 et suivants)

D'un autre côté, Sara, la femme libre, de qui descendent les enfants de la promesse, représente le Testament de la grâce, la vraie Eglise de Dieu, la Jérusalem d'en haut, qui est la mère des croyants, puisqu'ils sont nés de nouveau dans son sein, et par les moyens de grâce dont elle est dépositaire. (Comparer : Hébreux 8.5, note, et surtout Hébreux 12.24) Celle-ci est libre, (verset 26) puisqu'elle renferme tous ceux que le Fils a affranchis et rendus fils de Dieu, ses vrais héritiers. (Galates 3.23 et suivants ; verset 5)

Ainsi l'apôtre, voulant caractériser les différences des deux Testaments par des types historiques, met en contraste : Agar et Sara, la chair et la promesse, l'esclavage et la liberté ; et, dans le développement de cette comparaison, une autre image s'offre à lui pour rendre la même pensée, et il oppose : Sinaï et la Jérusalem terrestre à la Jérusalem d'en haut, ou à la vraie Eglise de Dieu.

Il faut seulement remarquer encore que la construction dans ces versets est restée inachevée, comme il arrive souvent à l'apôtre par le fait de la vivacité de son style. Il dit, verset 24 "l'une, du mont de Sina ;" ce qui faisait attendre, à verset 26 "l'autre, la femme libre, représente la Jérusalem d'en haut... ;" au lieu de cela il passe immédiatement au second point de comparaison : "mais la Jérusalem d'en haut est libre."

- Jusqu'ici, ce passage ne présente de difficulté qu'à ceux qui veulent disputer sur la justesse de cette double allégorie, ce qui est toujours possible. Mais, tandis que ces images sont claires, telles qu'elles se trouvent à versets 24,26, voici à verset 25 une remarque incidente, qui, d'après la leçon du texte reçu, paraît établir un rapport typique assez obscur entre le nom d'Agar et le nom de Sinaï ; en effet on lit dans le texte reçu littéralement traduit : "l'Agar est le mont Sina en Arabie ;" il y a dans le grec, avant le mot Agar, un article neutre to qui semble ne pouvoir indiquer que onoma (le nom), et alors il faudrait traduire : "le mot Agar signifie, en Arabie, Sinaï."

De là, une sérieuse difficulté, car le nom d'Agar, en hébreu, ne signifie pas Sina. On a bien trouvé qu'en arabe Agar signifie un roc ; et comme il s'agit ici de l'Arabie, on a cru avoir rencontré la pensée de l'apôtre. Mais que prouverait cette fortuite coïncidence de la signification de deux noms ? Soit en hébreu, soit en arabe, insister sur cette insignifiante rencontre serait un pauvre jeu de mots.

D'autres, y compris Calvin, traduisent : "ce type Agar, représente Sina," mais cela est grammaticalement inadmissible.

D'autres encore rendent ainsi la parenthèse : "ce qui a été dit d'Agar (to legomenon, au lieu de to onoma) signifie..."

- Mais tout cela devient inutile par le simple fait que le mot Agar, dans ce verset, est très probablement une inadvertance ou une gauche correction de copiste. Plusieurs manuscrits anciens ne l'ont pas ; Bengel, Lachmann et d'autres critiques modernes le rejettent du texte.

Voici dès lors le texte authentique que nous avons rétabli dans notre traduction : "Car le mont Sina est en Arabie." Si l'on demande quel peut être le but de cette observation géographique sur le Sinaï, la réponse assez vraisemblable est que Paul voulait rappeler par là la patrie des descendants d'Ismaël, dont plusieurs tribus habitaient l'Arabie, et qui étaient fréquemment nommés "les enfants d'Agar." L'apôtre cherche à compléter ainsi et à rendre plus frappant le parallèle établi dans tout ce passage entre Agar et Sinaï.
