Je l'ai choisi, littéralement connu : Je suis entré dans une relation intime avec lui, afin que ses descendants, instruits par lui à marcher dans la bonne voie, puissent me servir d'instruments pour accomplir mon plan de reconquérir le monde rebelle.

Pour réaliser ce plan, il faut que le peuple élu soit fidèle, et pour qu'il le soit, il lui faut l'intelligence des jugements divins qu'Abraham ne manquera pas de lui transmettre. Voilà pourquoi Dieu trouve bon de lui faire connaître la sentence de condamnation qu'il vient de prononcer, afin qu'il discerne, dans le bouleversement des éléments qui va se produire, autre chose qu'un simple phénomène naturel, qu'il y reconnaisse la main du juge de toute la terre.

La destruction de Sodome et de Gomorrhe est restée pour Israël le type des jugements de Dieu. Comparez Deutéronome 29.23 ; Esaïe 1.9 ; Osée 11.8 ; Amos 4.11, etc.
