Au lieu de bénir Sem directement, Noé bénit l'Eternel qui le bénira.

Dieu de Sem. Noé a le sentiment que, dans ce moment déjà, Sem est vis-à-vis de l'Eternel dans une relation particulière. C'est à la famille de ce patriarche que Dieu continuera à se révéler, et c'est en elle que son culte se perpétuera, même quand l'idolâtrie aura envahi le monde ; c'est d'elle que sortira le peuple dont il sera le Dieu. Les mots suivants : et que Canaan soit son serviteur, sont comme une espèce de refrain qui revient encore une fois tel quel après la bénédiction de Japheth. On pourrait traduire aussi leur serviteur, ce qui signifierait serviteur de Cham et de Japhet ; mais non de Sem pris au sens collectif, c'est-à-dire des Sémites, comme on l'a entendu souvent.
