Cette première défense avait un motif beaucoup plus élevé que celui de l'hygiène. Elle est motivée Lévitique 17.11 par le fait que le sang est le véhicule de la vie, ce qui ne permet pas de le rabaisser à un emploi alimentaire.

La principale raison de s'abstenir de manger de la chair « avec son âme » était sans doute due au sang répandu lors des sacrifices, en vue de préserver chez les pécheurs le sentiment d'un précieux pardon ; bien qu'il puisse sembler cruel de répandre le sang des animaux, les hommes devraient être néanmoins choqués à l'idée que certains puissent tuer leurs semblables.

L'homme ne doit pas se donner la mort. Nos vies appartiennent à Dieu et nous sommes appelés à ne quitter ce monde que lorsque notre heure survient, ordonnée par Dieu. Si nous anticipons volontairement l'heure de notre mort, nous sommes alors redevables à Dieu.

Quand l'Éternel reprend la vie d'un homme, par l'acte d'un meurtrier, cela peut nous paraître injuste ; ce dernier est incapable de réparer le méfait, sinon seulement par sa vie. Tôt ou tard, quel que soit l'endroit au monde où se trouvent les meurtriers, Dieu les découvrira et les punira. Il y a cependant ceux, qui au nom du service divin, protègent les innocents en répandant la terreur parmi les méchants ; ils ne porteront pas l'épée en vain, Romains 13:4.

Les meurtres prémédités devraient toujours être punis de mort. Il y a une raison à cela : l'homme, créé à l'image de Dieu, est néanmoins mauvais et est toujours capable de tuer son prochain. Quelle dégradation il apporte à cette image, quel déshonneur !
