Grec : Et étant devenu plus haut que les cieux, c'est-à-dire : étant entré dans le lieu très saint, la demeure de Dieu. (Hébreux 4.14, comparez Ephésiens 1.21,4.10)

- Les qualificatifs appliqués au souverain sacrificateur donnent lieu à diverses remarques.

Saint est rarement employé dans le Nouveau Testament, mais se trouve souvent dans les Septante ; il désigne celui qui appartient à l'Eternel et est l'objet de son amour.

Innocent (grec sans malice) exprime la pureté des sentiments du Christ.

Sans souillure le montre préservé de toute impureté qui pourrait lui venir du dehors.

Séparé des pécheurs, est pris par les uns au sens moral, comme dans Hébreux 4.15.

"Ce n'est pas qu'il nous repousse de sa compagnie, mais parce qu'il est pur de toute immondicité." Calvin.

D'autres le rattachent étroitement à élevé au-dessus des cieux, et le prennent au sens local : ce Christ est élevé au plus haut des cieux, et il est, par là même, séparé des pécheurs.

Toutes les qualités énumérées dans ce passage sont attribuées, non à Jésus vivant sur la terre, (Hébreux 2.9,10,17,18 ; 4.15) mais au Christ glorifié, remplissant dans les cieux son office de souverain sacrificateur.

Observons dans ce texte la description de la sainteté de Christ. Il est libre de toute caractéristique inhérente au péché, n'ayant, par Sa nature, la moindre mauvaise tendance à ce sujet. Nul péché ne demeure en Lui, pas la moindre inclination coupable, éléments qui résident en chaque chrétien, fut-il le meilleur.

Christ est dénué de tout mal, incapable de commettre quelque transgression ; Il n'usa ici-bas d'aucune violence, et Il n'y avait aucune tromperie dans Ses propos. Il est parfaitement pur.

En ce qui nous concerne, Il est difficile de nous garder purs, et de ne pas commettre de faute ; nous sommes tous coupables. Mais nul ne doit être consterné par ce fait, s'il vient à Dieu, en invoquant le Nom de son bien-aimé Fils. Que chacun soit assuré que Christ les délivrera de tout péché, au temps de l'épreuve ou de la souffrance, comme en période de prospérité, à l'heure de la mort, et au jour du jugement !
