Le mot que nous traduisons par autel d'or pour les parfums a offert aux exégètes une difficulté qui bien que sans importance pour la pensée, est appelée par Calmet "la plus grande difficulté de toute l'épître !"

Le mot grec signifie proprement ce qui sert à offrir le parfum, et peut désigner soit un encensoir soit un autel. Il est employé dans le premier sens par les Septante, (2Chroniques 26.19 ; Ezéchiel 8.11) et par des auteurs classiques, dans le second sens, il se trouve également chez les écrivains profanes, puis dans Philon, dans Josèphe et dans les Pères de l'Eglise.

Dès les temps les plus anciens, les interprètes se sont divisés. La Peschito (second siècle) traduit par encensoir et l'auteur du manuscrit du Vatican (B) a introduit dans le texte une correction qui montre qu'il donne au mot le sens d'autel des parfums. On lit, en effet, dans ce document à Hébreux 9.2, après proposition des pains, les mots et l'autel d'or pour les parfums, qui manquent, par contre, à Hébreux 9.4.

Ceux qui adoptent la signification d'encensoir s'appuient sur le fait que le souverain sacrificateur, au jour des expiations, devait brûler de l'encens dans le lieu très saint en présence du trône de Dieu. (Lévitique 16.12,13 ; Exode 30.34-38) On suppose qu'il y avait un encensoir exclusivement consacré à cet usage et appartenant au lieu très saint, où qu'il fût conservé d'ailleurs. Mais cette supposition est difficile à établir.

Un encensoir spécial n'est mentionné nulle part dans l'Ancien Testament. Or, dans sa description du tabernacle, l'auteur ne nomme que les objets principaux, connus par les textes de la loi. L'encensoir aurait-il été déposé habituellement dans le lieu très saint ? En ce cas le souverain sacrificateur aurait de y pénétrer une première fois pour chercher l'ustensile. Cela est inadmissible, puisqu'il devait brûler l'encens, précisément pour que la fumée lui dérobât la vue du propitiatoire. (Lévitique 16.13)

Si l'on admettait, pour cette raison que l'encensoir était gardé ailleurs, il faudrait penser que le participe employé par l'auteur (un tabernacle ayant) voulait dire que cet encensoir était affecté au service du tabernacle. Mais comme l'arche de l'alliance, nommée aussitôt après, est également régime de ce participe, celui-ci doit être pris au sens local.

Ces difficultés sont grandes, et, de plus, l'omission de l'autel des parfums serait inexplicable, vu la place qu'il tenait dans le culte et vu la signification de l'office que le sacrificateur y accomplissait : la fumée de l'encens, était le symbole des prières qui s'élevaient à Dieu, et en offrant l'encens, le sacrificateur exerçait cette fonction d'intercesseur, qui devait être l'un des principaux rôles du Christ. (Hébreux 7.25)

Aussi la plupart des commentateurs et des traducteurs modernes adoptent-ils le sens d'autel des parfums.

Les uns admettent que l'auteur a commis une erreur en plaçant cet autel dans le lieu très saint. Il aurait été amené à cette erreur par des passages comme Exode 26.35, où, dans la description du lieu saint, l'autel des parfums est omis ; Exode 30.6, où l'Eternel dit à Moïse : "Tu placeras l'autel devant le voile qui est sur l'arche du témoignage, devant le propitiatoire qui est sur le témoignage (les tables de la loi), où je me trouverai avec toi."

D'autres estiment qu'une telle erreur est invraisemblable, puisque l'auteur ne pouvait ignorer que le sacrificateur offrait tous les jours le parfum sur cet autel (Luc 1.9 ; comparez Hébreux 9.6), et que, suivant ses propres indications, (Hébreux 9.7) le lieu très saint n'était accessible qu'une fois par an au seul souverain sacrificateur.. Ils supposent donc que l'auteur admettait pour le tabernacle une organisation différente de celle établie plus tard dans le temple ou bien, ce qui paraît plus probable, ils estiment qu'on ne doit pas presser les termes employés.

L'auteur aurait rattaché l'autel des parfums au lieu très saint, à l'entrée duquel il était placé, parce que la fumée de l'encens qu'on y brûlait montait vers Dieu, dont le lieu très saint était la demeure, et aussi parce que cet autel tenait une place particulière dans les cérémonies du jour des expiations, auquel l'auteur pense dans ce chapitre. (Comparer Exode 30.10, où l'autel est lui-même appelé un saint des saints. Lévitique 16.18)

L'arche de l'alliance était le signe de la présence de Jéhova au milieu de son peuple. L'auteur la décrit comme entièrement (grec de tous côtés, c'est-à-dire "en dedans et en dehors," Exode 25.11) recouverte d'or, puis il énumère les objets sacrés qui y étaient renfermés.

Mais ici encore on a trouvé une difficulté. L'auteur place dans l'arche un vase d'or contenant la manne et la verge d'Aaron qui avait fleuri. Il se fonde sur Exode 16.33,34, (où les Septante ajoutent que le vase était d'or) et sur Nombres 17.10. Dans ces passages, il est dit que ces deux objets furent déposés "devant l'Eternel," "devant le témoignage," par où l'auteur de l'Exode voulait dire probablement : "devant l'arche." Mais l'interprétation donnée par notre auteur peut se défendre aussi, car le mot de "témoignage," employé seul, signifie les tables de la loi.

Placer ces deux objets "devant le témoignage," c'était par conséquent les mettre à côté des tables de la loi dans l'arche. Quelle autre place d'ailleurs aurait-on pu leur assigner, s'ils devaient être religieusement conservés durant tout le temps où le tabernacle fut sans cesse transporté d'un lieu à l'autre à la suite d'Israël ?

On oppose, il est vrai, à cette explication 1Rois 8.9, où il est dit expressément "qu'il n'y avait dans l'arche que les deux tables de pierre." Mais s'il en était ainsi au temps de Salomon, après que l'arche, longtemps entre les mains des Philistins, eut été dépouillée de tout ce qui avait pu tenter la cupidité de ces ennemis d'Israël, cela ne veut pas dire qu'il en ait été ainsi dès l'origine. La remarque du livre des Rois, loin d'exclure cette hypothèse, la confirme : elle fait supposer que l'arche avait renfermé auparavant d'autres objets que les tables de la loi, sans cela il eut été oiseux d'attirer l'attention sur un fait connu de tout Israël.

Les tables de l'alliance, contenu principal de l'arche étaient le "témoignage" à la fois de la sainteté de l'Eternel et du péché de l'homme, le témoignage de Dieu qui dit à l'homme. Je ne traiterai jamais d'alliance avec toi que : sur cette base : "Soyez saints, car je suis saint." Si ces tables n'avaient été recouvertes par le propitiatoire où s'exerçait la miséricorde au moyen du sacrifice, elles n'auraient été autre chose que le témoignage de la condamnation des pécheurs.
