Jean 1.33

Jean-Baptiste tient à répéter qu'il ne connaissait pas Jésus comme le Messie, (verset 31, note) que par conséquent son témoignage ne venait pas de lui, puis il fait remonter la certitude de ce témoignage jusqu'à Dieu lui-même, qui, en l'envoyant remplir sa mission, lui avait donné un signe lui ne devait laisser aucun doute dans son esprit. (verset 34)

- Quelques interprètes pensent que, selon le récit de notre évangéliste, Jésus n'aurait point reçu, lors de son baptême, un don nouveau et spécial du Saint-Esprit, puisqu'il avait toujours été, en tant que Parole faite chair, sous l'influence de cet Esprit.

Le but exclusif de la scène rapportée par Jean-Baptiste aurait été de donner à celui-ci la certitude que Jésus était le Messie.

Cette idée est en contradiction directe avec le récit des synoptiques, suivant lequel les manifestations divines qui se produisent au baptême de Jésus s'adressent à celui-ci en premier lieu (voir les notes), et elle ne saurait être attribuée à l'auteur du quatrième évangile, car elle méconnaît le fait de l'incarnation, point capital du Prologue. (verset 14)

Ce fait, envisagé dans toutes ses conséquences, nous oblige à admettre que Jésus a passé, dans son enfance et sa jeunesse, par un développement religieux et moral (Luc 2.40) il l'accomplit, sans doute, sous l'action constante du Saint-Esprit ; mais cela n'empêcha pas qu'il ne reçût une effusion toute spéciale de cet Esprit à l'heure décisive du baptême, qui marque pour lui une étape importante de sa vie intérieure en même temps que l'entrée dans la carrière messianique.

      5 not by works of righteousness, which we did ourselves, but according to his mercy, he saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit,
      6 whom he poured out on us richly, through Jesus Christ our Savior;
