Cette crainte des Romains était-elle sincère ?

Plusieurs interprètes le pensent avec les idées charnelles que les Juifs se faisaient du Messie, ils pouvaient redouter que Jésus ne suscitât parmi le peuple quelque émeute, qui aurait provoqué une répression sévère de la part des Romains et amené peut-être la suppression du pouvoir du sanhédrin.

C'est là ce qu'ils expriment par ces termes énergiques : Ils détruiront (grec enlèveront, supprimeront) et notre lieu c'est-à-dire Jérusalem et son temple, siège de notre gouvernement et notre nation, à laquelle ils ôteront ce qui lui reste de son antique indépendance.

Que cette crainte fût sincère ou simulée leur principal mobile était l'ambition égoïste : ils craignent que les Romains ne mettent un terme à leur domination sur ce qu'ils appellent notre (tout l'accent porte sur ce mot en grec) lieu, notre nation.
