Convaincre le monde de péché telle est la première action de l'Esprit de Dieu ; c'est aussi le premier pas que puisse faire le pécheur vers son renouvellement moral.

Mais à l'idée générale du péché exprimée au verset 8, Jésus ajoute un trait spécial qui caractérise la vraie nature du péché en tout homme et en particulier dans le monde juif qui avait repoussé le Messie, l'incrédulité : de péché, parce qu'ils ou en ce qu'ils ne croient pas en moi.

La plus accablante démonstration du péché en l'homme, de son inimitié contre Dieu, de sa révolte, consiste à rejeter Celui qui fut sur la terre l'image vivante de la sainteté et de l'amour de Dieu.

C'est là le péché dans son essence, la source de tous les autres, la seule cause de la condamnation. Tous les autres péchés, expiés par la mort de Christ, peuvent être pardonnés dès que le pécheur embrasse le Sauveur avec foi ; mais ce péché-là le retient dans la mort et rend son salut impossible.

Dès qu'un homme en est convaincu, il ne lui reste plus ni excuse ni fuite : il faut qu'il se repente et revienne à Dieu, ou se perde.

- Dès le jour de la Pentecôte, cette œuvre de l'Esprit s'accomplit au milieu du peuple juif, par la bouche de l'apôtre Pierre ; (Actes 2.22,23 ; 3.14,15) et cette conviction de péché pénétra immédiatement dans les consciences sincères. (Actes 2.37)
