Dans cette troisième partie du discours, (versets 41-47) Jésus ne fait plus que développer le reproche qu'il vient d'adresser à ses auditeurs : Vous ne voulez pas !

Il montre d'abord d'où provient leur mauvais vouloir, (versets 41-44) puis il leur en dévoile les conséquences. (versets 45-47)

S'il leur reproche avec tant de force de ne pas croire en lui, ce n'est pas qu'il recherche en aucune manière la gloire qui vient des hommes ; (comparez verset 44) mais c'est parce qu'il les connaît, (Jean 2.24) et qu'il sait que leur cœur est étranger à l'amour de Dieu.

Telle est la première et grande cause de leur incrédulité. S'ils avaient eux-mêmes une étincelle de cet amour pour Dieu, ils le sentiraient dans chacune des paroles du Sauveur. (Comparer Jean 3.19-21)
