31 et 32 Ces versets décrivent enfin la chose nouvelle que l'Eternel annonçait verset 22. Dans tout l'Ancien Testament c'est ici le seul passage où soit employée cette expression hardie de nouvelle alliance, qui semble reléguer au nombre des choses un jour passées et périmées le contrat solennel conclu avec le peuple au pied du Sinaï. Jésus s'est approprié cette expression, Luc 22.20 ; et saint Paul l'a développée dans toute sa profondeur, 2Corinthiens 3.6-18.

Alliance qu'eux ont rompue. L'intention de ces mots est de mettre entièrement à la charge du peuple la rupture de ce premier contrat qui eût pu et dû demeurer toujours. A supposer en effet que le peuple y eût été fidèle, le contrat nouveau ne lui eût pas été refusé sans doute. Mais, au lieu de le conclure à la suite d'un douloureux divorce, le peuple eût passé d'une alliance à l'autre par une transformation paisible de la relation qui l'unissait à son Dieu. L'alliance de la lettre se fût épanouie sans révolution en celle de l'Esprit. L'enfant mineur fût devenu majeur.
