La bible annotée Commentaire de Matthew Henry Les Récabites. D'après 1Chroniques 2.55, les Récabites étaient une branche du peuple des Kéniens. Ceux-ci étaient une tribu madianite qui, au temps de Moïse, avait pour chef Hobab, son beau-frère. Ils se joignirent aux Israélites lors de la conquête de Canaan (Nombres 10.29 ; Juges 1.16). Ils paraissent avoir adopté la religion d'Israël ; car le nom de Jéhova se retrouve dans plusieurs de leurs noms propres. Au temps du roi Jéhu, l'un de leurs chefs, Jéhonadab (ou par abréviation Jonadab), montra le plus grand zèle pour la destruction du culte de Baal (2Rois 10.15-23). Ce même Jonadab, fils de Récab, voulant sans doute préserver ses descendants des dangers moraux de la vie sédentaire, que plusieurs familles kéniennes avaient déjà adoptée (1Samuel 30.29), les organisa en une sorte de congrégation religieuse dont les membres devaient s'abstenir de vin et continuer leur genre de vie nomade. Les Récabites étaient donc demeurés fidèles depuis près de trois siècles à ces prescriptions de leur père. Evidemment, ce que le prophète entend offrir en exemple à ses compatriotes, ce n'est pas l'abstinence des Récabites, mais leur pieux respect pour les volontés de leur ancêtre.Dans une des chambres. Il y avait des chambres en grand nombre dans les édifices adjacents au temple (1Rois 6.5). Les unes servaient de lieu de dépôt pour les ustensiles du culte, les provisions provenant du paiement des dîmes et l'argent du sanctuaire ; d'autres étaient habitées par les lévites et les sacrificateurs en fonction ; d'autres enfin paraissent avoir été employées comme locaux pour des assemblées et des conférences (1Chroniques 9.26 ; 28.12 ; Ezéchiel 40.17 ; Jean 8.20).
